Has anyone tried the 13x (3.5mm) wide zoom HD lens?

Is it available? What is the price?

(Clearly, the 16x Funinon lens is THE problem of the camera. As we could see with the mini35 footage - given the right input from the lens - sensor and codec perform very well)

The 13x3.5 isn't out yet. The MSRP on the lens is $11,995.00.

I used it briefly at a trade show, and it seemed very nice. Didn't get a chance to really check it out, but the brief first impression was "wow, this is the lens you want!"

Barry in your opinion is did the lens seem that impressive for the price? or would the wide adaptor suffice. I find I need more clearance than I am used to with the DVX to get what I want in the frame.

I could buy another HD100 and hard drive unit for that price.

I asked the JVC sales manager about the 13x the other day and he says the ETA (for Canada) is October.
It is obvious that any pro camera operator/owner is going to need a high quality wide lens. However, documentary/corporate shooting is only half of what I do, so I'm also considering just buying the mini35 and renting 35mm lenses when needed.

It is a tough decision to make without actually testing the 13x lens. There are many things to consider. I need a wide lens solution soon though.

I think spec wise the 13X lens is ideal top to bottom. We'll see about the quality which should be 10 times higher than the stock lens based on price.

JVC either has very smart marketing or they've stupidly fallen into something with the lens situation. The stock lens is 'good enough' but as the shooter get's used to the camera they'll clamor for a better lens and JVC is right there with a $12,000 lens.

Globalmediapro.com I noticed has the 13x priced at $8050.

Possibly a sketchy purchase for U.S. buyers, I don't know. But it's a big change/discount. Of course I'm sur ethey dont' actually HAVE them right now either.

Can you post a link to that Nate? I can't find that lens on globalmediapro.com (they say they have the HD100 in stock..., so perhaps they'll be fast with the 13x lens...)

The wide-angle adapter is very mildly wider... I think it's only like 18% wider. And I forgot what it costs; something like $800?

So for $1600 (the value of the stock lens plus the mildly-wider wide-angle adapter) you get a mediocre lens with significant chromatic aberration, made only slightly wider by adding a big hunk of glass on the front, which in turn probably has some impact on the quality of the lens itself...

... or you could put that $1600 towards the cost of the 13x lens, which (from my brief experience with it) would be dramatically wider-angle, and probably much superior glass too...

I think it's a huge no-brainer, the 13x seems like a vastly superior lens. But that's based only on brief initial impressions, obviously it needs to prove itself in controlled testing situations. But assuming it does, there's no doubt which solution is the better one.

I'm sorry, it was Expandore...which seems to maybe be the same company.

Man that place is in Singapore. I'd hate to have to go all the way to Singapore to ring some shyster's neck
