FS7: Has Anyone Received Their FS7 II Yet?

Anyone?

Did you order with the 18-110 glass?

Just interested in hearing any initial comments.

Particularly interested to see if anyone has tested with Metabones IV or Speedbooster? Metabones claims that the existing adapters are not compatible with FS7 II while the newly-announced adapters are. We've had this discussion on another thread but just looking for updates.

Yikes. hadn't heard that. I might get my hands on one later this week, I'll let you know

Got mine about a week and a half ago. My Canon EF Metabones Adapter (the latest version, non-Speedbooster) works perfectly with the 16-35 f4L, the 70-200 f2.8L IS II, and the 50mm f1.2L. No issues whatsoever.

How do you like the new locking mechanism for the lenses? I'm very intrigued by it. Does it feel more solid?

I haven't shot extensively with the original recipe FS7, but I can tell you the new locking mech feels uber-solid to me. Way more solid than the mount on my FS5 felt, that's for sure. Interestingly, I also don't seem to have any issue changing lenses without another pair of hands. And when the mount locks in, you know it.

That's great to hear. I'm interested in picking up a MKII with the new Metabones adapters (also a PL style mount) so that I can ditch the need for lens and adapter support. I hate having to rig up my FS7 just to run a 100-400mm Canon lens. It makes it heavier and adds bulk which is not something I want for most of my work.

Appreciate the feedback, particularly about the Metabones. I had discussed this with Juan Martinez and he had not heard of any problems. He actually had not tried the Metabones EF on the FS7 II yet, but had tried the Metabones Nikon adapter. Inside info-- some of the FS7 II promo footage of NYC was shot with Nikon glass.

Meanwhile, I will be able to give a first hand report shortly as I now have learned that my FS7 II will be delivered tomorrow. I also bought it with the 18-110.

OK. I have FS5 and Metabones EF to Nex MkIV and Metabones Speedbooster EF to Nex Ultra T (i.e. Both the latest versions until the very recent Metabones announcement).

So, Stephen, if I read this right (just had a few beers with mates in the pub...so please excuse me if I got this wrong!) my Metabones MkIV should work just fine on the FS7 MkII...still need info on as to if the Speedbooster might mount.

Reason I ask is I'm considering the FS7 MkII but was put off by high(er) price and the possible need to buy 2 more (just announced Metabones) adapters to make all my EF glass work.

I shot a quick gig last week with the Metabones (non-SB) EF to E-Mount adapter, and it worked perfectly with my Canon lenses on the FS7II. I don't know what testing others have done to say it won't work, but it worked fine for me.

Thank you for the swift reply. Great news!

So let's see if anyone on here has had a chance to use the (current) Speedbooster with the FS7 MkII yet.

Stephen,

I am referencing Metabones announcement of the new E to EF mounts in which they have a compatibility matrix. It shows the Mark IV and the SB incompatible with FS7 II while the two new items are shown as compatible.

At any rate, this is one of the items on my list to test when my camera shows up.

Here's what I can do…

Tomorrow, I'll drag my FS7 to Texas Media Systems, and I'll slap on every Metabones adapter they have to see what works. Then I'll report back. ;)

Thanks. I'll also test the Mk IV but dont have the SB. I do have the Kipon so can test that with the FS7 II

Think there is any chance of Sony eventually offering an upgrade service for previous FS7 owners? Either to trade in for a version II or physically alter version I to II. I knownit sounds a little bit of wishful thinking but other companies offer such things. For instance, i recently sent my paul c buff einstien strobes in for upgrade (replacement) they are $500 strobes but the upgrade is only $45 and you get a brand new strobe with an extra two years of warranty!

Sony is talking about offering the new VF mount + mic mount as well as the new arm as an option. This is no secret as Juan Martinez discussed it at the EC Pro Video event a couple of weeks ago. There is at the moment no firm plan or pricing; he was just gauging interest among current FS7 users.

As far as any kind of trade up or incentive, I know of nothing or at least it hasn't been discussed with me either on or off the record. Of course, if I hear anything off the record I can't repeat it.

My speculation-- Sony will no doubt assess sales figures and then determine a marketing strategy.

I definitely wouldn't count on any upgrade such as swapping the lens mount or variable ND because that required a whole reconfiguration of the camera side panel.

I would also think it would be a couple of months before we hear anything definitive about the VF mount and arm replacement parts.

Thanks Ned! Its a shame because the only one upgrade I actually care about is the lens mount. The ND is a nice to have but not even that important for the work I do.

Based on the info I've seen, the new lens mount is actually a redesigned chassis element, so it'd be quite an involved modification (if it were even possible). The FS7 II with he 18-110mm lens is $13K in the US, "saving" you $500. So if you really wanted to upgrade- via selling your FS7 (and you were going to buy that lens anyway)- then you could apply that $500 to the cost of selling your old cam and buying new model.

The variND is the biggest benefit in my eyes. Being able to shoot at precisely the aperture you want in all kinds of light is amazing. When I see footage shot using auto shutter speed, it often looks strobe-like and jerky. Maintaining a perfect 1/48 without flipping through NDs, touching the iris, or screwing with the gain sounds pretty good to me.

Hey mate,

I can confirm that the current SB works perfectly with my FS7 II and just as well as on the original body despite that misleading info on their website.

All of these reports of Metabones IV and SB are as I would have expected. Neither I nor Juan can figure out why Metabones listed them as incompatible with FS7 II

My guess would be M/B are just playing it safe, as they probably haven't got their hands on an FS7-II yet. Better safe than sorry, eh?
