Has anyone experienced this problem?

A few days ago I was capturing some recently shot footage. When I finished the process there were a few hundred dropped frames in the action. Then, when attempting to rewind the tape to try things again there appeared a "*" in the tape counter time readout on the screen and the player would not rewind.

I then tried loading a cleaning tape, but it would not play, either.

Is my camera FUBAR?

Ouch! That doesn't sound good at all.

Will ANY tape play in your camera? If not, then it sure does sound like a major malfunction. A professional head cleaning might solve the problem -- then again, it could be more serious. Probably best to have a repair shop look your camera over.

Good luck!

I removed the battery from the camera and set it aside for several days. In the meantime I found the extended warranty papers and was preparing to ship it off. Then, I decided to try operating the camera again to confirm that the problem was still there. It was not; the camera was once again operating flawlessly.

Tomorrow I will take it to my workplace and shoot some new video, then bring it back and run a capture and see if it hoses up again. It is possible that, during that previous capture process, something got scrambled and hosed up the working memory, and that removing the battery cleared things out. It could also be signs of a developing intermittent fault. If it fails again it goes in a box to New York for service.
