Has anyone ever gone component to either DVI or VGA to monitor?

I know that computer monitors aren't designed for this, but after throwing down some cash for a new HVX and other gear, I just can't pony up for an HD production monitor at the moment. So I though I could output composite to my SD broadcast monitor for color, and if necessary, FW to the software scopes I have on the laptop. But I was thinking of going component out to an LCD computer monitor for focus.

Any one ever done that?

I was using an sd crt with component out of my HVX for focusing until I bought the smallHD DP1 lcd. At $799 it's a great HD focus tool. I never tried a component feed to a typical lcd computer monitor but it would probably provide some aid over the viewfinder or small lcd on the camera.

Hmmm, I can't seem to get this to work and would appreciate anyone who can give me some insight.

I got a component to VGA cable at Micro Center, but they only had ones with the male component ends. So I had a few couplers lying around to connect the male ends of the HVX component cable to the male ends of the component to VGA cable. I don't know if that is the issue. They are not all exactly the same.

Has anyone got this setup (Component from the HVX to VGA on the LCD monitor) to work?

Yes I have.

I was DP on a production a year ago and our producer/all around genius handyman built a rig together that had a 19" LCD monitor in a nice little box with a converter and everything built in. I'll see if I cannot get the name or website he got the converter from (it requires power, but so does the monitor...). It worked perfectly. Even had a plate that you could attach to a c-stand and everything.

I tried to run the component to VGA cable from another source (DVD player) to make sure it wasn't the source or connectors and it still didn't work. SO either I got a bum cable, or running directly from a component source to a VGA input doesn't work. But then why make the cable?

Yes I have.

So there was some kind of converter that needed power, eh? That doesn't bode well.

I am not tied to VGA. I could go with DVI, but the extra LCD I have here only has VGA, so that's what I used. Would DVI have the same issues?

I have, but...

I have, but...

it was only standard def. I took my HVX component-out, fed to a component-to-DVI scaler, (a Gefen HD Mate Scaler, now sold under a different name), over a 50' DVI cable, to a Samsung SyncMaster T220 monitor. I was operating the camera well out of sight of the monitor, but the viewers certainly seemed to like it.

I don't think Gefen makes that same model anymore, but something similar may be what you need. Maybe this:

I paid full price ( $ 180 +/-) for the long DVI cable, but I see the vendor I bought from is clearing them out at $ 70. Shorter ones are much less expensive.

Lastly, re-read pages 251 & 252 of Barry's book on using component out on the HVX, particularly the last 2 sentences under the heading "Audio/video in/out connectors". If I recall correctly, I recorded to tape while sending the component-out to the scaler. I don't think I used a FW recorder for fear of it being overridden by use of the component connector, as Barry indicates. (But maybe I just misunderstand what Barry means there).

Good luck.

i have a $200 sharp brand LCD HDTV that works quite well for focus and framing. color was pretty off compared to a proper broadcast monitor. but id imagine if you rented a high-end monitor you could put them side by side and dial in the TV to as close to the monitor as possible then just save the settings.

my clients were just fine with it until i rented a panasonic btlh17 one day. and after that i had to buy one to keep them happy : (
