has anyone actually had an E-series card burn out?

part of me thinks the 'cheapness' of the E series is just fear mongering. not to mention, 5000 hours recording is A LOT in the grand scheme of things. so, has anyone actually experiences burn out / failure of these cards?

side question - does E series work with the original hvx200? i heard you needed the 200A/hpx for them to work. that true?

Works in the original HVX with a firmware update. One thing I haven't seen mentioned about the lifetime is the potential for a much longer life. The rating of say 5000 doesn't mean it will shut off at 5000. Just means you don't want to use it for critical stuff.

Also you should use panasonics format utility to format the cards it will show you the status of the card.

it would technically be nearly impossible to have reached that point yet. unless you were just set out trying to.

wait, i heard 5 years if you filled it up completely once a day. That's 1825 rewrites, not 5000 hours. If your taping HD on a 16 gb card, its life is 486 hours. Many of us keep our cams into the thosands of hours so it would need to be replaced much sooner than the camera. That being said a 64 gb card used only for dvcpro 50 will last about 3893 which will mostlikly out last the life of our cams. Any way you look at it, its cheaper then tape. Also if you format using the p2 format program on the computer it will tell you the condition and how long it has left. As mentioned before, at the end of its life, it does not stop working on rewrite 1825, but it may stop working at any time.

At this point no one has had a failure other then user error on an e series. (I'm sure Panasonic would recall them if their were failures this soon) The E seriies works in the 200 (non A) but it may need a firmware update (free). I never updated mine and it worked just fine.

I still don't understand how it could stop working after 5 years ? if there aren't any moving parts.

Memory wears out. All memory devices have a limited number of rewrite cycles. SLC memory can last for 100,000 rewrite cycles, but MLC memory - which is faster and cheaper - has a much more limited lifespan.

At my age that "lifespan" you speak of is shrinking. "E" series is fine for me. I also don't buy green bananas. But I have "As" and "Rs" just is case someone should discover the fountain of youth before I cash in.
My DVX 100a is gathering dust, but it still works like the day I bought in in 2003. When I need SD with and a WA adapter for some aps, there it is!
Can't go wrong with the HPX 170 IMHO. It is beautifully balanced for hand held work and focus assist is a help until I can add an smallHD monitor. I don't know from 150s. Rented one for a project and it's OK.

I have 1.5K hours between my stock 16gb E series and 3x8gb "r" series cards, no problems with almost daily use. I have no worries with the E-series, they are gonna outlast my use of the camera and have already paid for themselves.

I worked for rental house that sent P2 cards out like mad and they've never had an E-series card go out on them. They have had quite a few SxS crap out on them though.
