Hardware for Xp Pro

Hi,

I posted this in a nother thread, but wanted to get input here too. I want to run Vegas or Xpress Pro (both edu) and want to know if the hardware I am considering would be good enough.

Dell Inspiron 8500 with a Pentium m 2.0 GHZ, 512 Ram, 40 gig HD.

And since I need external storage, can I run a desktop drive through one of the USB 2.0 ports and use the native firewire port to capture from my camera at the same time?

I got a line on this notebook with a 2 year warranty and some really nice accessories to go with it for $800 and dont want to let it get away, so any help ASAP would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should be fine. USB 2.0 drives are not supported for Avid but you could always attached storage via a FireWire to PCMCIA connection.

Thanks Michael. I suppose a Mojo is out of the question even with the card slot adapter? I dont know if all of the connectors in a laptop are on the same bus. I lost out on that steal of a laptop but might get another one with an Athlon 64 processor. Oh well, we'll see.

If you get a PCMCIA card for Firewire it should work. Put the storage on the PCMCIA and the Mojo on the native FireWire connection.

Yes, plug in your mojo/camera on one firewire outlet and your HD on another firewire PCMCIA card or USB 2.0 and your ready to go. HP Pavilions have builtin firewire outlets and mine works fine with this setup. As for what you get-using Avid with only 512ram is going to be a little strain on your laptop. Having more ram is a better way to go since Avid uses so much ram to run. You might look into getting 1 gig and turn off all the unnecessary items that XP runs to conserve ram. You might even consider just running Avid XPress DV vs the pro version since they seem to run better on laptop configurations. PS. HP Pavilion zv5260us is the model I use but it is heavy and battery life is really short (IE 1.5hrs ).
