Harddrive Recording

Ok guys, I'm interested in this new panasonic wunderkam but I'm also quite concerned over this P2 business. I've heard murmurings about a hard drive recording option... how does this work, what are the specifics of it and how much will it cost. I'd rather lug around a portable harddrive than shell out 2k for 8 minutes recording time. Am I misinformed here about this harddrive thing, can someone shed some light on this issue?

Cordially,

You can't use ANY hard-drive. You need to use a special Firestore that should come out in February-March and cost more or less 2000$ It should be at least 80Gb though

What happened to the "straight to laptop" approach? Does that still work?

A Laptop or Firestore or other "smart" device can offer the same functionality as P2. Any off the shelf "dumb" HD in a USB or Firewire shell can be used to offload footage from a P2 card but cannot be streamed to directly.

The firewire port is 4pin since there isn't enough power available to serve a firewire HD, but is there power to the USB port? Will a USB drive be able to be powered from the camera for transfering from P2?

As far as I know, from the last update we've been given, the USB connection can only be used to connect the camera to a laptop, where it appears as an external hard drive from which to transfer files (or edit straight off of the P2 cards). The only way to "plug in a hard drive and dump files from the P2 card" is by using a firewire drive (and NOT usb). This was pretty dissapointing news to me, as well.

Haakon is probably correct - and sorry to add to the confusion, but I thought they did away with the USB port all together in favor of the firewire connection? :undecided

Haakon is correct. The USB conenction is only used to transfer files from the P2 card(s) to your computer. The only way to dump files directly to an external drive is through the firewire connection.

In order to record directly to a hard drive you can either connect to a computer through the firewire connection, or use the upcoming Firestore drive (also through the firewire connection).

The Firestore will be available in March for less than $2000 and will be 100GB in size.
