What would it take to build a home made harddrive capture deck?

Or is there a way to make a PCMICA interface that goes to HD to replace the P2 media... Is that possible? Or is there somthing special with the P2 memory card?

Im planing on building my own Harddrive recorder pack.
Just wondering if anyone can give any advice.
Would the HD need to be formated in a special way?

Any info would be good.

There are very many things "special" about the P2 card; according to an earlier post by Spec-Comm (a company that has actually reverse-engineered the P2 card in order to make a P2-compatible CinePorter product) the P2 card is like a little supermicro-computer that has to understand and respond to the commands that the camera gives it. It's not just a card, it's actually a processor in and of itself.

You would need a device that was essentially a computer to know how and where to send the files, and do the handshake with the camera.

Basically a simple hard drive will not work alone as it is retarded..has no brain function, it either writes or reads. You need something to tell the camera, "hey, I am connected, and I can read your footage. I see you are in HDPRO mode, so I am ready for that bit rate blah blah blah" .

Hard drives today don't have that command to send to the camera, so it just sits there and does nothing.

You would need a contoller to interface with the camera and the hard drive.
It can be done, it just hasn't yet.

ok... IN that case does anyone know if pannasonic are going to release a p2-firewire/usb portable HD unit? or anything like that?

2 grand... its a bit exspensive for what it is...
and at the end of the day all it is is a portable firewire hard drive.

If pan wanted to they could of given us the ability ti just plug in any drive... but its typical manopolistic thinking this one :/

ahh well
