Hardcore Rock Music Video

Looks cool as an extra video piece. You may want to walk away for a bit and come back and look at the pacing. It may need a bit more consistancy. Good work.

good start bro .. and i'm diggin the mathcore scene.

the song is long ... and it would be cool (just an idea) to thow in some other images. right now you jump back and forth between about 5-6 different shots (wide band, CU guitar neck, CU bass neck, CU singer,) .. would be cool to see some feet, walls, ceiling, camera motion swingin around a bit, lights, sweat, etc. maybe some completely outside shots to add contrast? sun, dogs, garbage cans, streets, chain fences ...

anyway .. i think you're heading in a good direction. keep on truckin...

Couldn't agree more Slimothy, but as far as the video itself goes, it was cool but what was that effect you used on the video. I think it was a gradient of colors but I could be wrong. What NLE did you use to edit it.

The video was cool, for the first minute or two, then I have to agree, even though you had a variety of shots they just seemed over-used before the song reached it's mid-point.

My advice for improvement would basically be what "Toaster" said. I think you have a good thing here, but it can be better.

Maybe there are some inserts you can film: like the band doing something outside of playing and at another location, for example, and for some reason the singer didn't have much of a presence for some reason, not sure if he didn't get enough screentime or what but he didn't stand out at all for me. Not sure if there's anything you can do about that.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I had to use Vegas Video 5 to edit it because both Avid & Final Cut where crapping out on me. The effects used were just a color gradient in a certain blend mode from After Effects that I dont remember off hand and the Vegas Video stock old film look as well.

The music kinda grew on me a bit. This wasn't supposed to even come out as good as it did. I just shot them practicing and decided to edit it together like that and now I wished I had more shots of other things to make it even better but yeah we are planning an actual video shoot now with a scripted story and everything to go with them jamming. Hopefully that turns out alot better.

I will continue posting my videos for you guys to watch though.

I liked the pace of the editing, and for not expecting anything to come out of it, I think it looks great! The gritty, dirty look really matches the music.

Funny how I'm crying about real frame jitter on the last video I shot in 16mm, and you're putting it in...lol.

My only suggestion, other than adding more shots, is that I thought some of the shots were a little too static. I think music like this usually lends itself well to shaky, handheld video, which you have some of...particularly towards the middle/end. I just thought things looked a little too 'locked down' in the beginning.

Yeah I know the beginning is too steady to me as well and too much of the drummer but that is all i had of the beginning so I was torn! ahhhh hehe.

The music si some of the more horryfying crap I have ever heard; it's an an insult to music to even refer to it as music so we should stay true to its heritage and refer to it as 'Ass on a Stick'.

That being said:

I agree with the sentiment; add some variety of shots to liven the eye-candy up nad tighten up the edit; they're playing triplet style so perhaps try and accomodate this

I like the effect you are using as far as 'film like' goes.

Doesn't look like the DVX100 though; more PD150 ish. Hmmm go figure.

Keep shooting anyway!

I dont get it.

is the standing still a stylistic thing?

or a scene thing?

take the camera off the tripod and get in a fight with the band during a run through. the shots seem to stiff and it doesnt seem like ANYONE is enjoying the music at all. not even the band.

its like they didnt know they were making a video..have i missed the point?

But wait, John. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

The video looked cool, but when I realized you were using a gradient that seemed wierd to me for an interior shot. When the Yellow was above the lit uper left corner it looked cool but when I could see the transition line moving across the screen - or the image moving behind the transition line, that pushed me out of it for a second. In otherwords stopped thinking "Hey this looks pretty cool, music is abrasive but has some technical prowess" and started thinking "hey is that ... I think ... oh I see he's using a grad filter." So I stoped listening or paying attention to contennt. Maybe it's just cause I know what a grad filter is, or maybe if you use a simmilar effect in the future, you might want to soften the transition or move it around so it stays over the light and is less obviously graduates.

You definately got the look and feel you were after!

EDIT a few minutes after post: -- Hey dude, whay not move that filter around, spin it, morph it to the music, etc. Could give you some cool looks.

Either Magic Bullet or G Film effects has an aged film filter that messes up the color with stains and faded areas kind of like the yellow was doing. I think it moves around to, so you moght check into that.

Later!

for your next shoot and combining what adam powell and jdanstan said, i think you can still fix it up using your existing (or future music vid) footage by working on possibly moving around and varying those filters/effects and getting the energy up in these shots by inserting some other footage with more motion and different locations.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't use a tripod at all shooting this. I was running around like crazy just filming them. Why doesn't it look like a DVX? Maybe im doing something wrong. Help!
