Hard Drive Recommendations

I am going overseas to shoot a documentary and plan on working in the following manner... I estimate I will shoot around 50 Gigs per day. 11 day shoot. Taking 2 TB of storage and or 1 TB while burning DVDs throughout the day. I can easily hire an assistant who does this all day. I will be dumping 2 4 Gig P2 Cards to the Hard Drives via Powerbook and/or burning DVDs on the powerbook.

What are your recommendations for hard drives for a situation like this? Should I go with a huge drive in RAID, like

Does anyone know of a 2 TB Raid that is reasonably priced?

or break it up into smaller drives? I thought about getting two enclosures and swapping drives out but it may be more trouble than it is worth. I cant afford to loose anything so I need to make sure the redundant system is well thought out.

Please advise...

Hey there,

For 899$ I will have to reccomend the 1tb drive. I have the 200 as well, and Im looking into using my ipod as an intermediary between the two, and 60gb is filling up faster than one could imagine. I have two 8 gig p2 cards and copy to my ipod each full one and loop.

you definately want sommething with a Raided protection. Raid 5, mirroring or something. If a drive dies and its not in raided protection your screwed.

I switched from Lacie to Gtech and love the drives. I had two Lacie 500 extemes fail this year. The Gtech is running smooth and is a 1TB. Next will be the 2.5TB when its released.

You may want to consider putting the data one two different hard drives. In the event that one hard drive is lost or dammaged, an exact copy of the same data is on another hard drive.

That Mac Guru's link mentions the Seagate 7200.8, there is a 7200.9 out.
Yeah, important thing is who manufactures the hard drives in the LaCie, or other third party external enclosures. Is it important to you that the enclosure is styled like a mac? If I were you, I would get an external enclosure that is mac styled and put a couple of Western Digital or Seagate drives that are SATA 3.0Gb/s with 16MB Cache in them.
Also note that a 500GB drive is almost double the cost what a 400GB drive is... You might want to get 400GB drives.
If you use SATA drives, does the powerbook have an external SATA interface?
Get an enclosure that has USB 2.0/Firewire AND SATA external interfaces. With the SATA external interface, those drives will perform just like internal drives.
Don't know who makes the best enclosures though.

Or select from these:

Make sure to scroll down to the Western Digital and Seagate external 400GB 16MB cache USB 2.0 drives, I would recommend those, cheap and reliable.

This is the one, if you have an external SATA interface... Remember is has no USB or 1394 interface. its SATA.

You will need something like this to run that enclosure though:
