Hard Drive Question

This may seem like a stupid question but i am new to this camera and i know it has alot of features but is it possible to hook up through USB ANY type of external hard drive to record or does it have to be a P2 card or the Firestone? For example hooking up a Western Digital. Would that work or does it have to be formatted and all that. Its a little confusing to me.

If you want to record to a hard drive you need some kind of smart device, a computer, (I use an old/new apple G4) between the camera and HD, and that is Firewire only, not USB. I use OWC 500g RAID drives and have been very happy with them.

So is it possible to hook up ur HVX through firewire into ur computer and capture your HD footage without a P2 card?

How is that done because my computer wont capture it. Do i need a particular driver or program to capture HD?

What computer? What software? What version? What hard drives? That info will help those who can provide guidance.

I use apple FCP studio software, an apple G4 to capture with and an apple G5 to edit with. If you are using a PC you need to do a check on here on what if anything will work with a PC. I gave up on my PC and went with apple which works very well.

I don't believe Vegas supports P2. I could be wrong... it certainly won't be the first or last time.

Take a look at DV Rack from Serious Magic. They can capture DV and HDV today, and the support for the HD codec has been announced and is in beta testing.

Vegas will support the HVX200 if you use the cineform intermediate Connect HD.

I am curious about the backup feature. I was reading through the manual and it says that you can transfer data from your P2 cards straight to a harddrive via the firewire port, you just need to set it up according to the manual and have the drive formatted properly.

I was also reading a bit about using different backup methods and I got the impression that, if the drive (i.e. Lacie, Wester Digital, Seagate, etc.) was formatted properly, you could record your data straight to the drive without using a computer to talk to it. If that was the case you wouldn't have to spend a butt load on the Firestore drive or on P2 cards.

Am I assuming correctly? I hope so cause that would rock.

Yes, you can connect an SBP2-compliant Firewire drive to the HVX directly. You can even format the drive from the HVX.

The downside is that the drive must be formatted using FAT32, and that you can transfer only while paused, and only from P2 media. In other words, you can dump the P2 card contents to your hard disk, but you cannot record directly to disk without writing to the P2 card first.

Actually, we're talking not about the drive, but the chipset (like 1394 Oxford 911) .
Just my 5 cents...:)

so what is the backup recording feature? Is that the same thing as transfering data to a Firewire drive from the P2 cards, because they are listed in different sections in the manual. I don't have a HVX yet so I'm not sure exactly how it all works or what it does.
