Hard Drive problem

Well, I recently purchased a Western Digital external 320G Hard Drive. First, I installed the drive with firewire, but then when I attempted to import in Premiere, it told me 1394 drivers were lost, and if any other 1394 drivers were installed (which they were from the hard drive) then to uninstall them. I then attempted to install the drive through USB 2 instead of firewire. Only when I tried to capture did I realize "DUH, USB2 doesnt have a high enough transfer rate to consistently capture video" So my problem is, how do I capture video to my HD? Do I have to buy a "hi-speed USB port"? If anybody could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Uninstall the drives 1394 drivers, and reinstall the Premiere ones.
The drive should now work in Premiere etc.

wow...reading back on my previous post, I just realized...that question sounds retarded and stupid, still though...I cannot think of a way to capture video directly to my HD without buying some type of H-S USB or something of that nature. Sorry for sounding like a total idiot.

USB2 is high speed USB. If you have a USB2 port on your computer then it will handle video transfer just fine. If you only have a USB 1.1 port then it will be too slow. BTW a USB2 PCI card can be bought for about $30 or even less.

If you need firewire, then follow Pookies advice. But be warned that using the same firewire controller for both your camera and the hard drive can cause performance problems.

your exactly right. It wasnt until after I wrote the post that I realized I typed the wrong port type. It is USB 1.1, I guess I'll just buy a USB2 PCI card, thanks a bunch for the recommendations.

yeah its good to seperate the streams if you capturing off your camera via firewire anyways, so one stream hits the firewire bus and the other rides the usb.

Does this ever really bother you PC users? I've been daisy-chaining stuff on Macs of all trim levels for capture for years, with never a problem. With some pretty crappy/slow hard drives, too. Hmmm... no power, no reliability, no speed... no wonder PC users prefer USB to FireWire...
