Hard drive issue

I recently bought a hitachi 1tb desktop hard drive and I am having a difficult time with it.

Whenever I select "Create Folder" a message pops up reading "Ths location is read only".

Also whenever I try setting the hard drive on final cut pro I get a message "Unable to set scratch disk. The selected directory is on write-protected or non-writable median"

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I could do to overcome these problems?

It's simply a permissions issue.

Select the drive icon on your desktop screen, click command-I for Info tab, go to the bottom and unlock the Lock icon if needed with your admin password, then click the plus symbol to add your user account and/or admin and then click the gear icon and "apply to enclosed items..."

I will be using it exclusively with the university's macs because I don't have a mac.

Do I still go through this even if I don't know the admin password, etc?
