What an amazing film! I started watching it, and didn't check how long it was. I was pulled in, and watching with interest... and since it was late at night, I kept thinking - well, it's been awhile, it'll probably end soon... and then it didn't. It kept going. Finally, I checked how long the film was - and I was gobsmacked... OVER FIVE HOURSE LONG!

You'd think that a drama about four women and their quotidian lives would start dragging at over 5 hours and I can report, that except for a couple of places which could be trimmed, the whole thing justified every minute! Absolutely pulls you in, and in many places the psychology is very complex and quite deep. Undoubtedly, some of the interest is that it deals with Japanese society, but by no means is that the prime interest. The psychological situations are quite fascinating and the effect of taking ones time has an additive impact that transcends mere addition of minutes. This is filmmaking on a very high level of sophistication.

If you want to experience something different, and have the stamina to last for over 5 hours, I can highly recommend this film!
