I really haven't used the DRS settings much, because they add noise, and I don't usually need what it provides. Anyway, I was shooting some exteriors in NYC with some high contrast and turned on DRS. I think on this one particular shot that I used in the edit, I recall using DRS 2. It's noisier than the rest of the footage, but as is would be fine as the shot tells a story and the noise is not that obvious.
But, I also just bought the Neat Video noise reduction plug-in, and tried that out and WOW. Totally clean. Obviously this plug-in can work on any noisy footage, but honestly I was shocked. I don't know what magic lurks behind this $99 plug-in, but it's nothing short of incredible. I saw no perceived lack of detail and any noise disappears. My concern is that I'll want to use it on EVERYTHING, just because and then have lots of 24 hour renders, but really you shouldn't need this plug-in much, but when you do it's worth it.
Having this plug-in makes me rethink the usefulness of the DRS settings.
