Hands on with the new Sony F3 "Any questions for Sony"

Guys - HDwarrior made this thread for questions - not for speculative debate. Post questions - or post in another thread please. Any debate in this thread will henceforth be removed.

Q: are they planning on selling the prime set separately, or is the low price due to the package deal? (hopefully not the quality of the lens set vs CP.2)
Q: Can we program the zoom rocker buttons for something else if we're not using the zoom lens? IDK for what, but something more useful than nothing :D
Q: does the Sony PL lenses have any data going to the mount like the cooke ones

This is what was said in SONY's "PRELIMINARY PRODUCT INFORMATION" sheet Lens- "PL mount (w/supplied lens mount adapter)" so I assumed this to mean the camera came with a PL adapter which could be removed to attach the new SONY zooms but I am not sure if any other lenses will work other than PL lenses.

Sorry here is Sony's take on this...SONY "This is a good question, thanks for raising this. We use a PL mount adaptor onto a new PMW-F3 mount to allow use of the new zoom lens which we are producing. The PL lens mount is optimised for the Super 35mm sensor, so there will be 100% compatibility with standard PL mount lenses which have been designed to be used with this film format. What is more we have built in the Arri and Cooke data interfaces into the lens mount.
This adds to the flexibility of the camera, so not only will you be able use standard PL mount lenses, but the new zoom lens we are designing."

Thanks, no doubt the new zooms will not work on any other camera. Nice to see that Arri and Cooke glass will work. As for 35mm still lenses we may have to wait to find out.

Hope I'm not too late.

1) price, specs (especially zoom range & aperture range) and release date for servo zoom?

2) will Sony make the lens mount electronics protocol available to other manufacturers, eg. Nikon-F3 mount????

Thanks everyone I have copied and pasted all your questions up to and including the last one from Doctor Wu. PS. This might be a good time to close this thread, thanks again.

Why close it? Why not post the replies to the questions here?

I was intending to do so but I can only "ask" a limited amount of questions to Sony. I will make sure that I post replies to all your questions next week on DVX USER.

Sorry, but again .. question number one ..
They said 'tentative' price ..
Will the official price down (for both) ?

when I first saw the specs I didn't think it was impressive, the more I look into it the more I realize its going for Red especially if you combine this with a Cinedeck to get 10-bit 4:4:4 uncompressed!

I told the cinedeck people they should be marketing their product for this camera its a perfect fit!

But $10K for the Cinedeck and it's bigger than the full size Ki Pro. Ouch. The Ki Pro Mini with 10-bit ProRes HQ would be better value at <$2K.

I dont see if time is allowed that I can't check for moire and alias though I will be more than surprised if this is a problem. I might also check the IR (RED RED) though I hope once again this has been tweaked out. Sorry I assume DR means Dynamic Range. Resolution... I must remember to take my chart.

HD warrior, look forward to the responses. And thank you for going out there and asking the questions on our behalf.

63dB S/N is practically impossible today in this type of sensor and pixel size. I would say they mean dynamic range at the base sensitivity, but S/N figures in brochures are always nonsense. Even when they are accurate, they only measure luma, while the problem in low light is chroma noise from white balance. A 54dB "S/N" EX1 was 44dB in the BBC test. Which is still great for the small EX1 CMOS pixel. >50dB S/N figures is very high end imaging, not 2010 CMOS camcorder material. An HPX500 with its remarkable pixel size (low res and 2/3") barely reaches 50dB.

I trust that it will have IR issues with fabrics etc. Sony always use lots of IR for sensitivity. Even in the F35, they have the filter a little high but that's probably because they want to capture good skin tonesand avoid color vigneting in wide angle lenses. If you look at the pixel size of F35 and how low it's base ISO is, you can imagine how much more IR the lower end models are capturing..

Q67 is sqrt(2) downsampling in the debayer algorithm (2N pixels to N pixels) on a 45 degree rotated bayer. Isn't F3 Q67?
