just got the sennheiser G3 system. looking for a handheld mic. the ususal suspects are AT, Sennheiser, Shure and EV. they all seem to be around 200 bucks. i have some recording mics that i was thinking of trying (SM-58) but the mic flag i want to use doesn't fit. this will be mostly club interviews to start.
i'm using an HVX 200......

any opinions ?

I dislike omnis (E-V 635a or RE50) for handheld interviewing and much prefer the Sennheiser MD46. I use the plug-on transmitter as well. The MD46 may be just as bad as the SM58 as far as fitting your mic flag, however, but it sounds better.

If it's a noisy location and the interviewer knows what he's doing, I'll even use a short shotgun sometimes.

from what i had read on other threads, the MD46 and the EV re50 were the most talked about. what about the Audio Technica bp4001 and 4002 from NAB 2011 ?
omni or cardoid ?

yes i've used shotgun on many occasions.

the b & h photo rep keep pushing me on the shure mic VP64L.

Don't have experience with that one, but I do have a Shure SM63L. Also worth considering. The construction isn't nearly as rugged (read: indestructible) as the EV 635a or the RE50, but it's still an effective dynamic handheld.

The 635a and the RE50 have been nearly-universal standards in news for a long time. They're the same mic: the RE50 is just a 635a in a more isolated housing to reduce handling noise. The 635a has been known as "The Hammer", as it can be used to hammer a nail through a 2x4 and will still work perfectly after. I've never been a huge fan of the sound of these mics, but they sure can take abuse.

For club interviews an omni like the RE50 will help where people tend to move a little off axis during the interview. The RE50 also has an internal shock mount to help isolate handling noise. The MD46 is a good mic, but would not be my first choice for moving target interviews.

Good Luck!
