FS7: Handgrip LANC cable broken plug

Hello All,

I've got an issue with our FS7 handgrip where the tip of the 2.5mm jack has broken off above the second ring so the handgrip no longer communicates with the camera. I've searched online for right angle 2.5mm plugs or jacks and haven't had any luck sourcing one. I've found straight jacks and female jacks but no luck finding something that would maintain the shape of the original.

Wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this issue? I've got a fellow operator in town with the FS7 and their pin is also slightly bent so it seems to me that this might be something that people are seeing? It would be helpful to know whether anyone has had to do this repair? Also wondering if the repair is as straightforward as I think it would be? Any insights to solving the issue would be appreciated. If I need to send it to Sony service so be it but I'd rather not be without the grip for a week or two if there's a quick fix.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Jon

Thanks for that. Unlike the FS5 handgrip the FS7 has the cable hardwired to the grip. I've got that extension cable for our FS5 and if this was the same design my problem would be solved. But alas, nothing can be too easy...

But I appreciate the help.

What sort of solution are you searching for Jon? The way I read Babu's message at least, was that you could order the same cable they used, cut the cable, cut your FS7 cable, and wire them together to give you a replacement jack.

Or am I missing something?

Cheers,

Well, I was really looking for a jack which is ready to solder onto the existing cable, but so far I've not been able to find one (2.5mm Right Angle). I actually have the SmallRig cable mentioned above and can cut and solder the two together but I was hoping to have a cleaner, more reliable connection. Something along the lines of this: http://https://www.markertek.com/product/ntp3rc-b/neutrik-ntp3rc-b-3-5mm-stereo-right-angle-mini-plug-black-gold but for whatever reason I can't locate one that is 2.5mm.

So Babu's post was along the lines of one solution I'd prepared for but was wondering if anyone else had needed to source the same part and done so successfully. I've been able to find a solder-ready 2.5mm jack that's straight but not right angle.

Thanks Jason.

Hey Jason, I contacted Sony a few months back inquiring about a new coiled cable for my FS7 handgrip. I've since purchased a FS7 MK II and no longer needed the cable, but I still have the email from Sony on file.

I just looked that email up for you and the cable you're looking for is as follows:

Ref. 808 - 184866111 - CURL CABLE
List price = $108.4 (in stock)

If you contact Sony via this email (propartsresearch@am.sony.com) and tell them that you're wanting to purchase the item I've listed above, then they will set up the order for you.

I have taken my grip apart before and it's relatively easy to do. Just remove all of the screws and take the plastic off of the grip and you'll see where the cable plugs in. I would suggest you order this cable from Sony and replace it yourself. An hour one afternoon is all it'll take. I hope this helps.

Joshua, Thanks for the part number and contact information. I was looking at what it would take to get into the handgrip so it's encouraging to hear that you've done this.

Paul, thanks for the link. That's what I was looking for but haven't been able to locate a seller in the States...

Thanks to all for the feedback!

Jon
