handcrank effect

Hey guys. I'm looking for how to pull off the handcrank Tony Scott style where certain frames become over exposed and then underexposed. I've seen people achieve this with after effects and other editing systems but everywhere I look I turn empty. So it's time to turn to you guys. I really hope you can help me with this.

Please check out this video for the style I am talking about.

What if you just duplicated the entire track and laid it over top of itself( in AE, FCP, AVID etc.). Adjust the gamma and contrast until it achieves the desired amount of over exposed look - then keyframe in the opacity for the areas that you want to look over exposed. Handraulic, yes but it should allow you some measure of control.

EDIT - Another bonus to this approach. Adding (duplicating) the track multiple times would allow you to burn in additional things like lens flare or film defects like gate weave etc., but in a more sporadic way by key framing in 1 or 2 frame dissolves/opacity changes.

Just a thought.

Lots of "screen" "add" or "multiply" blending modes, just laying the footage over itself, or experiment with white cards, too. Part of what looks best will depend on if the shots are over or under exposed or high or low key shots.

It looks cool if you add a vingetting, so that the burn effect has different levels in the center as opposed to the edges. "Glow" is another interesting effect to use in conjunction with that look. Or maybe even "film burn" although I can't remember if it's Cycore that makes that sweet plugin.
