Halo Rig HD and tripod compatibility

I am looking to purchase the Halo rig HD for $110. Don't really think I need the kit. I am curious though, to those that use them how well they mount to tripods. According to Halo's site, they seem to mount to tripods now just fine.
I have a manfrotto 501HDV head with the standard quick release plate it comes with. What I would like to do when I am out recording is have the Halo mounted to my HMC150, and also on the tripod head. Assume I start out on the tripod, I would like to have the flexibility to take the camera right off of the head with the Halo already attached. Based on the head that I own, and the Halo HD rig, can anyone offer any insight as to whether this will work for me?

Hi Abeas,

Yes the bottom the the Halo Rig HD has a standard 1/4 tripod mount which will allow you to mount it on your tripod or monopod. Since your 501 has a quick release you can quickly slide the camera off the tripod and shoot with just the rig.

This is a 501hdv head in the pic:

Thanks a lot. I actually just order it. Another couple questions if you don't mind. First off, when I am using the halo rig, would one use OIS or not? Secondly, if I pull this off of my tripod, I will have to disconnect my monitor connected via HDMI. If I am still recording, am I going to damage the footage or freak out the camera if I unplug the HDMI cable while recording? Thanks!

No problem!

Yeah I use the OIS, it will help out way more than it will hurt.

99.9% sure you should have no problem unplugging the HDMI cable while recording... something always worth testing though!

i commented on the Fig Rig via twitter (@CamMcCasland) and the people (@halorig) sent me a link to their site.

Seems like a cool product, and possibly a better solution for the price vs the fig rig. Anybody have opinions on either?

Hey Cameron,

I posted a response over there. Cool you started a thread over there in hardware.
