Half Switching ND Switch

Ok, this may be a dumb question but... I noticed that sliding the ND switch partiially between one setting and the next gives an intermediate setting. But, it's not consistent.

So, I'm guessing the ND switch is moving an actual ND filter within the lens path.

Is this what's occurring?

Might this be useful or would the partial coverage make for weird video?

Hmm, just a thought, but if it is mechanical and the switch simply slides filters in front of the lens path then it would be cool if the filters were rectangular and slid vertically downard. Then, you would be able to have a built in split ND filter for sky/ground shots.

Thanks!

Re: Half Switching ND Switch

The ND filter is an actual filter that is used, it is not digital. I believe that you are correct that it actually slides the filter into place, however I have no idea if they are square or round. I don't know if that between setting would be so good as it could slip out of places with a thunk and ruin your shot.

There's a little bit of resistance on my switch so it is possible to set it half way between settings and have it hold.
