Haiti [Members going to help]

I was informed this afternoon that I leave Friday morning at 6AM to head to Haiti to get some footage of the earthquake damage. I'll be there for 5 days. I'm excited and scared all at the same time.

Godspeed! I think you are going to experience something that will affect your life from here on out. I worked EMS for almost 20 years and once had a tornado hit a town in my service area, but that was only 2.4 square miles of devastation. I can't image what you are going to witness. Best of luck.

Good luck man, on a side note (not trying to hijack your thread) if anyone would like to help you can donate $10 to the American Red Cross for Haiti via text. Just send "HAITI" to 90999 and it will show up on your bill. You can also goto the Red Cross website.

They are saying 100,000 could die from the after math, infections, lack of medical care etc.

Be safe and take some antibiotics with you.

Safe travels & good luck.

That said, I have to ask why? What is the footage going to be used for? How many angles of a disaster do we really need to see?

A week in Haiti will change your perception of the world even under normal circumstances...

You're in for a serious emotional ride... both upon arrival... and after you return.

Actually... I'm more then a little jealous.

A guy who is on a sailboat board has been anchored in Port-Au-Prince for 3 months is saying to take lots of anti bacterial soap, several cases of bottled water and food (for your personal consumption). He left today to avoid the chaos, he's going to wait it out in Cuba. People are starting to kill others for what little they have left, it's always been a very violent country btw, now it's really bad. Travel with others so you don't get robbed for your camera. You might also want to take pepper spray, I don't think they will let you in the country with a gun.

A reporter on CNN just described all the bodies stacked 8 feet high out in the streets. I'd stay close to the military that is arriving today.

A friend of mine thinks he might have lost his family in the quake. He works here in the US and sends money home. There's no way to get in contact with them at the moment, and have heard from others that it's extremely dangerous there right now. Be very careful and good luck with your trip.

Thank you all for the well wishes.

Zaza, I work for an NPO that helps feed/clothe/educate children in different countries. We have 3000 kids in Haiti, and we're going to assess everything to prepare teams that will be going in in the upcoming weeks / months.

I will be with 3 other guys, all bigger than me (fortunately). None of them will be lugging equipment around, so I'm hoping that will be a deterrent for any attack.

Tell your friend to goto the Red Cross site and enter his relatives names, as soon as something is known they will notify him, good or bad.
