Had the strangest thing happen - media lost - switching from video to stills in NTSC

Just a quick heads up really for people shooting on the A7sII. Had a shoot for Playstation yesterday that required me to shoot at 30fps while in the UK so switched the camera to NTSC mode to get up the relevant selections.

Part way through the job they needed me to grab some stills for their PR department. I switched from Video mode to manual mode and got a warning saying you couldn't take stills in this format and did I want to format the card. Naturally I cancelled, and then the camera autoformatted it anyway!

Trying all sorts of recovery software but it seems everything is gone. :(

Just thought I'd warn people that this combination of settings does not play nice for some reason and at the very least you should have a separate clean card installed just for stills.

On a side note have so far tried:

Sandisk Rescue Pro Deluxe
Recuva
Card Rescue

And got nothing off it. If anyone has any suggestions that would be grand.

What camera were you using??

How long did you give Card Rescue to do it's thing? I recently had to use it; first attempt failed because I was impatient and thought it was done after a few mins.

I ran it again and left it for nearly 30mins; this time it did recover all the files.

Did the full/deep scan thingy and left each piece of software until complete. each one took over an hour and none found anything.

Could it be the hardware?

When I want to play a ntsc dvd on the dvd player, my computer says I can make only three changes from pal to ntsc. After that it can't be changed. Has to do with taxes I think. Maybe the same with your camera and/or cardreader?

Oh no it's nothing like that.

There shouldn't even be a PAL/NTSC selector considering we are in an HD world. Just give me all the framerates like on other cameras. Just another anachronism Sony have clung to.

This incident was just a weird quirk whereby the camera demanded to reformat the card (which had been recording in 'NTSC') once I selected stills mode.

Nothing to do with regions which is the concept behind dvd sales etc, whereby different markets don't want sales of the product from the next region along.

Hi Ben, sorry firstly for the late reply, I´ve registered only with the purpose of answering you but for some kind of reason, I have not been able to do so because of registration issues for a couple of weeks. Well, to get to the point, I don't know if that helps you, but Ive had the same issues as you describe and I found that on the last menu section of the camera (sorry I don't have the camera handy right now, the one that looks like a case) there is an option for recovering lost data. I don't know why it does it, but Ive to fix it very frequently actually. As soon as I get home I will tell you the exact route. Hope that helps though I believe it to be to late sadly....

No worries - One of the benefits of ridculously overshooting was we had it covered in the end but thanks again :)
