Hacked Sony A7S?!

10bit 4:2:2 on the A7s sensor/form factor would be so fun! Like a vista vision low light a bmpcc.

Would be be cool if it were a stable/real hack ;)

But what it tells us besides the fact that it's in the service mode? (or developer mode) That part about 4K still can be fake.

But I'd LOVE this to be true. MagicLantern successor :D Just imagine options...

I was just about to sell my A7s; magic lantern on the 5D is so much better. I'll hold onto it for a couple of weeks just in case this isn't BS.

The first video I saw said "20 fps" on video during UHD-1 recording. So take that for what you will.

What I want from one of these small cameras is 10-bpc 4:2:2 recording in some log format.

slog2 would have almost no banding :) currently thats one of the thing i most hate when using slog, the other one is noise.

imagine they could hack slog2 to be usable from iso 100. more DR and less noise. :)

well, minimum iso is 3200 because thats where the sensor has the most DR. So even if they could hack it, it wouldnt have more DR

May not be entirely true because the A7SII uses the same sensor and SLOG2/SLOG3 supposedly is native 1600 ISO. So going by this assumption, the hack could bring it down to 1600 ISO and still maintain DR.

Wait, I didn't knew this existed. I take my words back, everything looks a lot more legit now. If they've made it possible to load third party apps I see no reason why it would not be possible to load camera operating one (lgCamera) that with some tweaks will control a7s camera with different settings (4K). I'm sure underneath everything is built like on any other android device, so if you'll already "in" the system it's a matter of time to find right line of code. And Sony clearly admitted that internal 4K on A7S was possible, but camera was overheating.

One more thing. Cannot find it now, but someone on dvxuser said that a person from camera shop that he spoke to admitted that he never saw a camera with such a high margin as a7s mark II. They've basically took a7s did a few tweaks and added ibis.

It makes a perfect sense now that someone actually did it. (I HOPE SO!! :D)

I ran some tests to check that Sony claim. It's not true. It has a lot more DR than the slog2 video mode allows.

Even so, this is most likely just a hoax. The 10-bit thing is highly unlikely. If he had said internal 8-bit 420 4K on the a7S, it would be actually believable. Internal 422 would already be a stretch in my mind. Those things are usually hard-coded in the processor.

I wasn't getting excited with no mention of raw video anyway. The Nikon raw hack is coming along, I'll take a raw 1080p D5500 or D810 over a 4k XAVC Sony any day.

This. I strongly suspect they don't have a 10bit DSP for filming with inside the A7s. So it is a hardware limitation not software. If I was a practical joker hoaxer, I'd have stuck with claiming it is 4K 420 8bit.

Really? I thought it was still very early days in that development, with many more steps still left to overcome. And I hadn't heard about anything new in many months.

The official API is quite restrictive, i did ask about whether i could control lenses via it (wireless control of lenses, in theory should be doable but not with the current API)

That github code appears to be a hack to access android underneath but i doubt even through that you'd be able to access the low level camera parts.

I'd imagine that you'd need to replace the whole firmware, not just try and get an app working. This isn't impossible but very very very difficult. And probably not worth the hassle.

Wasn't this same guy promoting another camera hack in the past which never appeared?

I wish these manufacturers would open their cameras some times, imagine crowdsource development work and the things that could be done with full access. There are some super clever people out there...

cheers
Paul
