hack in PAL land

I know that with the hack, there isn't anymore any restriction NTSC/PAL. But I'd like to listen other PAL users using the hack. Are you happy with the results?

what kind of results are you wanting to hear? it is better than it was out of the box for me, then again out of the box it was pretty good to begin with. there is no difference between ntsc/pal other than framerates.

I've also heard something that the hack works better with the NTSC version than with the units for sale in PAL countries.

The firmware more or less works the same for PAl & NTSC. Only NTSC users had more issues with the pull down etc. Their job was made easier, though 24p is still little unstable. The PAL only feature is what European users will appreciate; the 30 min restriction removal.

As a PAL user, I find the hack has made this a far better movie camera. 25p is a nice addition. Third party battery, beefed up MJPEG, 4.2.2 color, language options, better audio are all nice in one way or other.

Best of all, I can go back to original firmware & version anytime and keep the warranty intact.:thumbup:

care to elaborate on specifics? I like to think it would work better on PAL concerning pulldown from 50i to 25p. Nice whole numbers =)

As for 30 min limit.

If you hack GH1 to remove the 30 min limit most likely you would increase the bitrate, too, to get rid of mud. I've made dozens of tests and if I raise bitrate to something that I could call mud-free (above 25) there's no longer continuous recording, in most cases it stops upon reaching 4gb. So, the irony with the 30 min limit removal is that you do remove it technically, but with the bitrate increased you end up with the camera being able to record only around 20 minutes and then it stops. That's another limitation you get as a side-effect of the hack.

You can hack 30 min limit separately, without increasing bitrate, of course, but what's the point in still having the infamous mud?

The point is when you're shooting a show where you don't need 'anti-mud' aka hack for nothing. Static shots in a music concert or a theatre play for example.

Please explain "better audio" as this is what I am trying to figure out at the moment. What difference if any does hacked firmware make to the audio recorded on the GH1? Is it possible to disable the AGC?

Am also trying to figure out if I could hook up my Beachtek DXA-4P adapter to the GH1 in order to get more control over audio levels and if yes could I also see the adjustments I make via the volume controls on the Beachtek via a level dislplay on the GH1's LCD or not - but come to think of it this second question probably belongs else(where?) on this forum.

I´m just satisfied with my hacked GH1. I always wanted an NTSC-Cam so I did the PAL-NTSC-Conversion. Was one reason for me to getting this cam. As I view all my videos on my computer monitor or my HD-TV I don´t have any use for 25 or 50p.
The higher bitrates are also a good thing.
