Hack/firmware update the Nikon D800 for 4K video?

Hi everyone,

I was thinking about something. Nikon said that the chip inside the D800 is better that the one in the Alexa.
Do you think that Nikon can realease a firmware that unable to shoot 4K/2K video? Maybe if somebody hack the
camera? Or do you think it's something impossible?

4k no.

It already shoots (almost) 2k. I suppose someone could hack it to get those extra few pixels, but why?

A friend of mine whos pretty highly placed at Nikon mentioned that their engineers were able to get a 4k stream out of their camera. The problem is it didn't do anything else. There's a reason digital cinema cameras cost so much more than HDSLR's. The sensor isn't the issue. It's the on board processing and throughput that becomes the bottleneck. Small, cheap, and capable. Unfortunately we have to pick two. :(

A proper downsampling would be more welcome i guess

There's no downsampling, they (most likely) use pixel binning. They claim to greatly reduce moire in video by using a special OLPF, which implies line skipping. For DX mode they just read a smaller part of the sensor. (This is presuming that by downsampling, you mean taking a full sensor read and electronically converting it to a smaller size, like photoshop would.)

As a photo camera perhaps (Should yield at least 15 stop DR at 8 megapixel/4k dxomark), but as a video one it will be far from that. The latest Sony exmor chip are very very good in DR. If they could provide some proper down scaling (very challenging with a 36 megapixel camera) and picture profiles that take the advantage of the DR it could be a very very good camera. Unfortunately I don't see it, from the sample shown, will have to see when it is released.

it would be super handy to pair with something like the BMCC. Both have small sensors so there wouldn't be a huge jump. Then you could add small 60fps parts for your high speed needs!
