Hack and file size? 1080p 60i not that great... Any tips for taking video also?blur

I used hacked "C" settings without 24p checked. I poped my SDHC card into my PS3 as I found it would playback from the card. Wondering if the hack increases the file size also? I'm about to go on vacation and have a 16gb card.

The footage while "ok" and filled the screen, appear like it was scaled 720p content and not as clean and sharp as I was hoping. I think many of us are sold on the basis of viewing footage on our small screen or little Web window.

The quick footage did seem like it had an interlaced feel to and showed as 1080i on my LCD.

I now just tried ticking 24p and C settings with a SanDisk extreme III 16gb formatted card and it failed on zooming out from my trees consistently. I'm bumping down to 40,40,60 and see what happens. I should have a Transcend class 10 card here today but I think its throughput might be near that of my old card, we'll see.

Any tips for shooting video? Maybe I'm panning to quick because I see tons of motion blur.

Ok I'm impressed now with exception

I shot a quick sequence moving through my dimly lit house and walked out to my deck and shot my trees again just as I did before. The "C" settings with 24p check failed on either zooming in or out from my tree which is full of small leaves (not sure what kind of tree). I could get it consistently to fail on the tree. I wish I would have written the error but it is a built in camera error message about not being able to write fast enough to the SDHC card.

With the "B" settings, its golden, my SDHC card is able to keep up. I'll see if I can get some screen grabs and compare but the "B" settings look good. Next I need to test SH, H, and L mode to assure the settings still work for those modes. I also did some really heaving panning through the tree and vinyl siding and no failure at all.

The 24p "B" settings look like the output I did from 1080 60i to 24p in Sony Vegas.

What I did notice which I'm not liking. I was tinkering around with my camera last night and saw some sensor noise vertical and horizontal bands. As I was walking through my house, I could see the same bands in the footage. My late lunch break is about over so don't have time to do anything else.

The banding is from underexposure. If you're inside and shooting with the kit lens...it's probably way underexposed. If the footage is dark, the camera probably isn't recording at a high bitrate anyways. It ramps up during bright, highly detailed footage.

If you're looking for tips on how to shoot video, the hack is probably only going to cause you headaches. If you have a problem with motion blur, higher bitrates aren't going to help.

If you're going on vacation, the 16gb card is probably only going to get you about an hour of footage or much less. In that case, I'd much rather use the factory firmware settings, and have plenty of recording times. Shooting home video, mud is not going to be the biggest challenge with your video.

60i-24p "conversion" always looks like crap, IMHO, even in Vegas. To properly remove pulldown, use Neoscene and get editable AVI files to boot.

And if you're still determined that you need higher bitrates and mess with the firmware, then stop shooting trees. ;) Just kidding.

Good luck with it, and have fun!

I should have posed the question as limitations versus tips.
