H4N Phantom Power to 1 Channel?

Well I picked up a 7D last month and just got my H4N today. I have a shoot on Sunday and was planning on using 4 channel mode with my cardioid mic (which requires phantom power) and the director wanted to also use his shotgun mic, which is AAA battery powered. I think his mic is a Azden SGM-1x. I'm not sure if his mic can run off phantom power or not and I assume that phantom power from the zoom is either on both channels or off.

I guess my question is, we're pretty much limited to one of the other because of the powering situation right?

Phantom power shouldn't have any adverse effect on any properly wired mic. If you're using an OLD ribbon mic that isn't wired to spec, then there can be problems, but that's not somehting anyone doing production sound is too likely to run into.

If you look at virtually any small (16 channels or fewer) sound board, they have a single master phantom switch that applies power to all channels of the board at once, and it's basically never an issue.

Still, you could always tell the director that it won't work and go get a better mic than the Azden ;)

Cool. Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if the phantom power would cause problems with the Azden or not.

The thought crossed my mind.
