H4N on your HMC15X - Is it possible?

Firstly, does anyone know exactly what is the main reason for the screw thread on top of the HMC handle. Are there any specific industrial accessories that can be screwed on top of the top handle?

Just wondering... Has anyone ever tried fixing a Zoom H4N on top of your HMC15X? How and where did you place it?

And by any chance anyone knows how to feed the audio coming from the H4n to the HMC camera? Or it is absolutely impossible at all without dismantling and making it an expensive and dangerous home electronic home project out of these recording devices?
:badputer:

I attach a monopod there for low shots. I think that might be the main reason for it. Not sure what advantage attaching a H4 would give you?

I am going to attach my Sennheiser G3 to it when I find the right adapter. That leaves my front accessory shoe open for a light.

Having the H4n pick up audio and then running it to the HMC would give you the same audio all around. You need that? You can do it though, h4n has a monitoring 1/8 mini out - run that to the XLR in on cam. You may need a mixer between the 2. Depends on the line levels (-10 or +4)

The top mount is a standard 1/4-20 which is like most tripods, shoe mounts, brackets and whatever.

I use the H4, but would use it off camera to record the board or form a better position.

I mentioned I use this on a few threads, works for many purposes.

I switched around the shoe mount so the side with rubber screws in the camera. This way the shoe mount is ready and be adjusted close or far from the camera.

Thank you all for the response.

HEy MAd...Hope you received the China LED lights. Mine works fine despite the plastic looking a bit cheap and fragile.

Well I'm glued to the idea of attaching stuff on the HMC. Stuff which makes it look like it's part of a mobile compact video rig and yet fully practical and functional. I chose to refrain from purchasing top end microphones at this point of time and decided to get the H4N since there are times I can attach it to the onboard stage engineer console. (At times Not) It was rather an impulsive purchase but the H4N I bought was on a year end low price sale price and I just had to grab it!

-- h4n has a monitoring 1/8 mini out - run that to the XLR in on cam. -- Oh yes why didn't I think of that! Great thanks!!! I will experiment on that one without a mixer and see how it goes... If i do need one then...hmm... maybe it will be too bulky and not worth attaching it to the cam. Have you tried recording audio through the H4N stereo mics onto the HMC before? What are your views?

Hey Desert, I have the H4 and very happy with it for small projects. I am sure the H4n will be a tad better. I have never used it like you are saying, I would just import the audio in post. I do have an assortment of mic's - so the XLR's are usually used up on my cam.

Going 1/8 is an unbalanced line so make sure its short. You may get some unwanted noise in the line from time to time.

I did get my China 128 and have used it on a project... For the price I am very happy with it, but the shoe mount is very light weight and the whole light bounces around when you move the camera.

I wont be using it on cam - Ill have the comer. This one will go on a light stand for backup.
