Guys, I can't recommend Kessler. So many quality and customer service issues. Furious

I posted a while ago with an issue I had. I have a Pocket Dolly 2.0 with the Basic Motion Control Kit.

Two weeks ago:

1. The wire that attaches to the terminal of the battery broke off. The attachment construction is lackluster at best.
2. The female 12V cigarette lighter plug's plastic housing cracked after about 5 days of use when we first got it over a year ago. It has since been held together with tape. The plastic is just cheap as hell.
3. The female power outlet in the controller *broke off*. The thing at the top and to the right:

Since when do power outlets break off? I've only had this happen on cheap Chinese-made sh*t because the solder points are crap.

Kessler's Lifetime warranty does not apply to any of their electronics, and that has only a one year warranty, probably because they're cheap as crap. Joel over at Kessler basically told me I'd have to buy a new controller and battery. Being time pressed with projects lined up and having to rent every day, I relented and spent hundreds on a replacement controller and battery.

Today:

1. My videographer noticed that one of the four wheels on the sled was loose and wobbly. She lightly tried to tighten the nut on the wheel and the entire wheel sheared off, leaving parts of the metal threading stuck in the sled itself.
2. Thinking that this would surely be covered under the lifetime warranty of Kessler, I emailed them, asking for a cross-ship so as to avoid having to rent at $100 every 3 days as much as possible.
3. Joel said it wasn't covered.

Unfortunately, there is no way for the wheel bolt to loosen without the cart itself being impacted and the wheel bolts bending. This is why the bolt snapped off, because it was tight and bent, and not loose.

However, if you would like to send the slider in for repair just let me know.

If the bolt is able to be drilled out and we can save the cart, the cost to repair should be around $50. However, if the cart has to be replaced it would be more around $150.

4. My videographer, who has been completely honest with me in the past even when she has accidentally broken gear before, said that she has never dropped or impacted the sled. I'm very much inclined to believe her. Joel, sight unseen except for a few photographs I emailed him, went right ahead and said they wouldn't cover it and practically accuses us of giving it impact damage. It can't possibly be due to some manufacturer defect, right? No weak point from manufacturing that eventually cropped up over a year later from repeated use. We ALL KNOW that NEVER happens. EVER.

So, there's my story.

There's no effing way I'm ever going to be recommending Kessler to ANYONE. This stuff isn't exactly the cheapest stuff in the world, ESPECIALLY for indies and especially when you consider the crappy plastic build quality of the motion control kit and the fact that they try to weasel out of warranty repairs.

Now, to those reading, please recommend a different slider with a motor and a separate controller that attaches via a wire. The Varavon is great but the motion controls are on the slider itself, which makes is difficult to control ergonomically for us. I've heard that the Konova sliders twist.

Afterwards I'd like to just cut my losses with Kessler. More trouble and stress than it's worth.

To add to this, some have had good dealings and others (like me) have had very bad dealings. The moral of the story, for anyone considering using this equipment to generated INCOME, ie. your LIVELIHOOD, is that it's hit or miss. Do you want something hit or miss for this task? Hit or miss is fine for non critical applications and for situations where finding a replacement is trivial. If my wireless Logitech mouse died right now I'd just go out and buy a new one at the store. And you know what? Despite having dropped it numerous times and using it thousands of hours a year it's still going strong like the day I bought it. Add to this the amazing customer service that you hear about from Logitech and they've got me for a customer for life, even if they charge a premium for their products (and they don't, really).

Hell, even for just the people doing this as their passion, not for income, it's still a lot of money.

Kessler has *literally* caused me to lose hundreds of dollars in rental fees and replacement equipment, rescheduling client jobs, stress, and my time in getting these stupid issues figured out. They cost to their customer is great, the cost to them is minimal if not negligible, and their service just plain sucks by insisting that we somehow manhandled our equipment and not offering a quick cross ship for warranty repair. It is in our best interest to have this equipment never, ever die on us. We take care of it.

I own the Kessler cineslider, the shuttlepod and the revolution head. As well as many bits and pieces. I've only got good things to say about their gear and service. I've had a few screws brake or needed a cart adjustment and they were very professional to deal with in regards to fixing.

I understand you've had a bad run but I wouldn't want others to not buy it as they'd be missing out on good product.

How can you say not for professional use? When guys like Tom Lowe shot half of Timescapes with their gear.. The shuttlepod and cineslider can handle the weight of epics and Arri and such. The cinedrive is a very advanced tool also. So why would it not be considered professional? I find that rather silly

Just to mention, with my scarlet mounted on the 8ft shuttlepod with tripod support either end with a stand in centre, and carefully levelled (time consuming) and the revolution head, two operators, this is an amazing setup with endless possibilities. :)

Yes he used both. Cinedrive wasn't available though.

All I'm saying in the right hands Kessler gear can be used for professional work and is by many professionals. It's not a cheap crappy eBay product like half the stuff out there these days. And one guys bad experience with customer service doesn't make them a company to not deal with.

True enough. But at the same time, unless the OP is lying, this is extremely egregious behavior by Kessler - this shouldn't happen even once. Gear can break, and stuff happens to anyone, even the best. It's not about that. It's about how the company responds, and here the response has been disqualifying. Stuff breaks, and perhaps that's reason to avoid motion control gear from Kessler, but the bigger problem is the customer service. One mixup is one thing, but continuous failure - yeah, that would put me off the company. YMMV.

If I was to fork out the amount for a Kessler product it would be for the reason to believe that I'm not only investing on a great product but also the superb service behind it. Otherwise I would rather just buy a cheap chinese knock off.

I am saying that because on two occasions I have seen Kesslers products brought on to profession, heavy duty, fast moving sets and both times I have seen them fail, catastrophically. This is my own observation. Their products are simply not heavy duty enough to stand up to the rigors of being thrown about on a ten ton truck with other heavy gear. However, it seems you have made your decision. If so, then why ask our opinion?
