When you guys frame a subject, do you take into account what it outside the 90% guideline mark. For instance, for a live event, would you make sure that whatever you did not want in shot to be completely off the screen, or just out of the guidelines?
 
If you want something out of the shot, you have to make sure it's not in your frame at all.

The 90% safe zone is only there to assure that whatever's inside that zone, will show up on all TVs. What's outside that zone isn't guaranteed to show up on all televisions, but a big chunk of it will probably show up on most televisions. And if you go to a situation where you're projecting the footage, it'll all show up.

So if you want something framed out, make sure it's totally invisible, not just in that 10% zone.
 
Just FYI, my Toshiba 40" LCD's default setting on HDMI is called "natural", which actually crops off the edge 10% just like old TVs used to do. Why they do this boggles my mind and perpetuates this safe zone issue. I don't know how many TVs ship this way, but I've had to configure mine to be "native".
 
i figured this much. So do you take the safe route by using the 90%, or go for the full frame of the HMC?
 
Depends on your distribution. If you're going to web you don't need to worry about it. But unfortunately, yes, many TVs and HD projectors are, for whatever reason, still cropping off 10% from the edges under default settings. So any critical content needs to be within the 90% guides for the foreseeable future (unless you have specific control over the particular TV you're sending it to)
 
I like what Barry said If you need it - keep it in the 90%... if you don't want it - keep it out of 100% (that goes for rails too, lol)

Ya. I was thinking of whether or not to keep the rails just outside the 90% mark. I kept it at 90% for the, just incase, scenario.
