GT Rudeboi video

The idea for the music video is the typical american rap stuff... but at least it was entertaining. The video quality is complete low budget. Lots of white blow outs... even the bedroom scene looked too white. No clouds on the outside video scenes. No color correction... no glossiness. Looks like it was shot with a $300 camera.

The positive is that the idea for the music video was good.
The negative is that the video quality was terrible. The bedroom opening scene was pure teenager... this guy is suppose to be a money making gangsta and he has a lil kids bedroom. The graffiti scene with the girl on the wall... the audio was gone... the money throwing part looked pathetic... needed mo money and slow motion.

Its the same old thing over and over when it comes to these videos, but I think its also the artist as well since their lyrics are lame. From a video stand point it looked to videoish done as andrae said with a $300 camera. It didn't really flow and just over all horrible. Not trying to shoot you down but the idea you were going for was shot down by the overall presention.

HI andrae

Thanks for the points. This is the first video I shot, it was done with the HVX, no add ons or anything, just the camera with the stock lens. How do you get that glossy effect? Would a simple auto color correction do the trick as well? Thnx

Jonny,

You can do it in After Effects 7 with duplicating the layer, adding a gaussian blur to one of the layers and then blending the two layers with a multiply, screen or overlay. This is a technique that is used in photography especially with portraits. Play around with saturation and shadow highlight too. I'm currently working on my own bleach bypass signature look... this stuff can be researched on the net.

You can also use Magic Bullet plugins in Final Cut Pro... lots of people use those plugins to create a certain look... I don't though... I'm trained from a photographic perspective and like to approach each scene like a frame in photoshop. Luckily After Effects has some of the same processes as in photoshop.

bad: it was kinda weak. It looked amateurish.
Lighting was blown out or too dark. watch your exposure.
Also noticed a couple of shaky camera movements / zooms. They didn't look intentional and kinda looked sloppy.
good: seemed to flow with the tune well. The story was OK. pretty good for a first video.

First off tell the bull to cut that glammer pimp/rap sh*t out. You in Guyana right? So why the F is the bull tryin' to spit like he on some NY get money pimp sh*t? I don't buy it at all. He ain't from here so do him. I'm sure Guyana got enuff goin on to rap about some real guyanese sh^t that we can relate to here. I'm from here grew up in this rap sh*t and i've never pimped b^tches, had a watch from Jacob the jewler etc. Every dope boy I grew up wit is doin 10-30, its bad enuff people here fall for that sh^t but to see it emulated on foreign soil is disgusting. Do you.

Now on to the video. You gotta study your rap video visuals. You can't really pay attention to what people on this forum say in regards to how rap videos look, because your budget dictates where you go with the visuals. Music videos in general are stale right now. Rock bands have a lot of dolly around the band/crane flying shots. Rap videos have a lot of ho's and cars, get over it. From what I saw in the video it looks like you'd have very nice textures and outdoor locations to play with but you picked some of the plainest ish ever...a white building? why? That's like shooting in a little ass white walled apartment. Nothing screams low budget like lack of visual contrast and all you need is some descent location scouting and cut out the saving private ryan hand held shots. Oh yeah and control your light! Neutral density is your friend. Get some black felt and practice blocking.

Look at this Ray Cash video shot on location in Cleveland OH. Now Cleveland ain't pretty. Its an old city with old buildings, no sense in making it look like a glossy get money type of video...even major budgets are foregoing that **** unless its all green screen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3EHSlrYEaI

Look at these points in the video
:14 secs
:21 secs close up
:48 Brick building white paint on it...can't go wrong with texture
:58 Look at the texture color and contrast
1:08 quick cuts white bldg red letters black outfit
1:15 Oh sh^t my grandmoms use to live over that way!

You get the point.

One more from one of my favorite Music Vid Directors Bernard Gourley

Rich Boy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-96xRo47aQ
:02 Projects this cat is from Alabama not NY/not LA/not ATL so why pretend? Now lets scout locations
:38 In front of the house great contrast especially with the HMI thrown on him probably through a big ass silk. Don't have an HMI..get your ass a piece of white board damn it! Your in Guyana with loads of 5600k sh^t!
:42 Better shot of the background...that dark blue looks great makes him pop too.
1:14 Call your peoples out more contrast against the bldg, car, and artist
1:42 Cut aways reinforce song theme southern car culture. If you got ask turn the station it is what is baby.
1:58 nice lush green/contrast to the cars/artist outfits pop against cars, cars pop against bldgs.
2:14 White girls contrast against the whole freakin' video
2:26 one of Bernards little signature things lately is these long action shots
2:35 Cut away...we in Alabama little houses, no money old cars with contrast

Another Bernard video

Contrasty black and white with those long shots...love that ****.

slow your role Cinebuddy, he can shoot whatever he likes. however you have a strong point about the location textures and contrasts. it is his first video and if he got paid by that pimping rapper he can now at least afford a uv filter to cut out that Glare.
keep shooting and practicing my man,.
videos like this are a good start for a beginner .
you now see why having Barry Green's book and DVD are important.
The HVX is a great tool and you are lucky to have one. it is like a wild hippo, it may be cute but dont pet it.
. These forum critics and opinionated videologists are great when it comes to technical aspects of your video, so listen to them. But disregard what they tell you about your content. if your rapper is the sh^t in guyana, shoot more drop it like its hot videos with him. like cinebuddy said "do you"!
learn from your mistakes find solutions for good quality. keep it up

No Slow your role hip-hop cool guy...the message is more to the artist not to him. The song is hot garbage from the beat to the content...pimp **** in Guyana when you ain't got no clean drinkin' 'water!? Please that's like a New Orleans rapper screamin bling-bling after Katrina washed his home down river...its not believable to a real rap fan period. See credibility is the crux of this rap sh*t. No one does rap like artists here, that's just the truth. It was born here and every new fad is a relevant reflection of how we live. The best rappers, the ones that last longer than they should, are here because they are honest reflections of whatever reality they are from. We call it staying in your lane. Listen to the new Jay Z album he's thirty eight and rich, so instead of claiming to deal drugs (something he hasn't had to do since he was 18 most likely) he celebrates his growth and changing circumstance...I don't have the bright watch/I got the right watch or I know what car to buy and no not to put rims on it. You know why he says these things, cause urban youth ain't buyin that a man making 3mil a year as the President of Def Jam is a dope dealer. Ask K-Fed about rappin', he went what we like to call Wood...not enuff sold to buy a pair of sneakers. This song was a poor imitation from the artists played out newera fitted ball cap to the do-rag under it. So save your lecture playboy and read my post cause you aint sonnin' nobody here, I ain't a casual rap fan I made my living recording these jokers before I new what miniDV was. Matter fact what you know bout' Schooly D/Freeway/Beans/BG/Lords of the Underground/Das Efx/EPMD/3rd Bass/Jaz-O/Mc Shan/BDP/D-Nice/Ms. Melody/MC Lyte/Rock Steady Crew/Marley Marl/ The Biz/Jungle Brothas/LONS/Steady B/Chris and Neef/Peedi Crack/Joe Crack/Remi Ma/Young Jeezy/TI/PE/Large Professor/Nasty Nas/Melle Mel? C'mon man cut it out. Drop it like it hot played out two years ago...get ya lingo together lol.

ha ha cinebuddy I can give two sh^ts bout what you know about rap or hip hop. Regardless of where you think its from, what's culturally authentic , moral or who sounds better. What r u thirteen years old?. Regardless of whom the post was directed to, the artist or the filmmaker, your statements have broad stereotypical cultural superiority complexities. As much as its a historical fact that hip hop originated in America and artists from here still dominate worldwide exposure and sales, its mainly because of media homogeneity, the power of the dollar and an ill digested global MTV pop culture. If some dude in Sudan or Japan decides to make a bling bling song and shoot a guerilla saving private ryan handheld style music video, about a local kid's big bling dreams, more grease to his elbows, its a free world you know. I personally thought that dude Bernard Gourley's videos were actually worse than Jonny's. Everybody has a right to an opinion and thats mine.

Now lets see your videos or short films so we can critique the content!!!

oh yeah post a video you did for any of the above rappers in your post, or some beats or songs you made for or with them.
In your own lingua "talk is cheap".

I was gonna respond to your last post, but going over your previous posts where in one you proclaim "finally some art in a hip hop video", and looking at that gay ass rag on your head I realized that you really don't know shi*...and that's ok because oppinons are like assholes no matter how ill informed they are.

my response"dude just post some videos you made and I will shut up". Since judging by most of your posts you are the king of all media. truly if you really knew your sh^t you would know who the "SO CALLED DUDE WITH the GAY ASS RAG IN MY AVATAR IS". You ignant mofo.

why is no one talking about lighting? When people talk about "looks" and "gloss" they talking about color and lighting (and an eye).

here's the first music video I ever shot. Just me and my friends pretending to play a Deftones song. It's not great (give me a break, it's my first one) but i think it shows what your lacking. And there's no CC, just white balance to orange.

http://www.stickypod.com/videos/data/541/musicvideohigh.mov

Did the artist pay you for this, how did HE feel about the final product?

My first video lighting was horrible for lighting and blown out whites OMG! You know what though I got a ton of work because of the way I did the story line. I'll find it and post it. Cheese I totally agree with the lighting statement but because the majority of the video was outdoors that's what I focused on. You can save crappy lighting with good outdoor contnet and forego the indoors footage. Danny I think we agreed on many counts, if you've read my other posts you'll see i'm pretty tired of rap on many levels. I think a rap video without a budget with a song that calls for one, is a waste of time. IE i'm a pimp with hot girls...and you can't afford hot girls, what is the point? I have literally shelved two videos with ug-mugs, I mean c'mon artist you've seen the girls in a Snoop/Jay Z/etc video...at least give me a proxy. Its hard to pull off an "I got money" video with no dough.

well, i understand what you mean about content being king, you're absolutely right, but as for look, looking at the 2 examples you posted there is a ton of lighting even though it's outside. Lot's of fill, bounce, flagging, etc. You don't get the kind of video you posted by just having a good rapper and a good camera and some sun.

It's a visual medium, music video in particular, and making things look good is all about learning how to control light.

(I know you understand this, Cinebuddy. that was for our newbie friend)

Oh, no doubt Cheese I did'nt take offense and meant none through the whole thread. I was down in Miami for an awards weekend to network etc. They were shooting a video for Fat Joe...its bright and beautiful and they pull out this big ass 12k HMI through a 12x12 silk...at this point i'm thinking wow I really don't know sh*t, a light in broad day light wow. Now I own some flags and scrims, and did'nt buy them until I could do it effectively with black foam core (a la Walter Graff) and that works pretty well. Man would'nt be great if it all happened as you stated..sun/talented artist...oh how great it would be.

Hey everyone

First of all thanks for the info, as much as you may not think it, I am very grateful to get the comments about the video directing, editing etc. I believe in harsh criticism to become better.

I manage the artiste here in Guyana so he didn't have to pay, and believe it or not, this video is claimed to be the BEST in Guyana. Now maybe you understand the level we're at.

As for the content, Guyanese may understand it a bit better. First of all, the imagery and story line is a play on visuals/audio. Gialiani's tune was about being the lyrical boss in Guyana, so we represented it in imagery. There ain't no bling on him, no flashy cars, only cash dealing. We ARE portraying a part of Guyana that people don't want to hear about. You google roger khan and you will know a little more about the bad side of Guyana. We showed a glimpse of what was going on here. The fact that there are bosses running round the streets of GT (Georgetown) collecting paper (cash). In Guyana prostitution is rampant with no lockdowns. Being in the VIP in Guyana don't mean you got to be the rich and famous, only if you known. Men with white vests and 3/4 shorts would be in the VIP and no one can't tell dem nothing. PLUS women WILL be all over them.

There is nothing in the video which shows wealth. The VIP scene only portrays being a boss.

Hip hop in guyana has a huge following. Only now we have an artiste that really making headway in terms of lyrics and diction. You would find that even when the big american rappers decide to buss down to we caribbean style reggae, they would try they hardest to put on a jamaican accent. Likewise. Trust me, hip hop music in a caribbean accent don't sound nice at all.

But I do understand that my video production needs work, and if you can point me to more learning I would appreciate. All those things - lighting, editing, color correcting etc. There isn't a film school or such here. No video editing classes, if you want to do video here you best be an adaptive learner.

Thanks for everything though, please check out the other video I did as well posted under "Music video - HVX200"

Hey Jonny thanks for enlightening us on Guyana. I second somthing that cinebuddy says- If there is only one hot chick you know she should be the only girl in the video. Hell even missy Elliot uses hot chicks in her videos. Your editing is Okay. I dont believe it when you say there is no film school in Guyana. There has to be a National film and television institue in Guyana. But if you insist there is'nt thats cool.
to start with get a UV filter for you camera. Setting your camera for outdoor lighting, go outside and take test shots all day, from early morning till dusk, using your friends as subjects. turn your zebra button on. when there is clipping, switch on your ND filters.
get large sheets of tin foil and build bounce cards. try this for a whole week, every day tweaking the camera a little bit each time and at different locations. Only work outdoors. review everything you have shot or pos shots on this site for people to guide you. dont do any indoor stuff or color corection till you understand how subjects look in daylight. once you get this down.
get some lights or build your own using the plethora of online do it yourself guides. or go to a still photography studio in your neighborhood and beg them to let you experiment with thier lights. the rule of thumb, as we all were taught in film school, is to to turn of all the lights and start building and image from there by turning on one light at a time and controlling how and where it illuminates, the shadows it creates, harsheness etc.
sorry i cant elaborate some more. but the above on your own several times before coming back to the lighting and cinematography section of this site.

At that time you will know the very right questions to ask.
learning to light and see the results is a physical thing and takes visual practice. its very hard to grasp the concept from books and websites.

Since you can afford a television you should cop the books PAINTING WITH LIGHT by John Alton and CINEMATOGRAPHY by Kris Malcewitz. they give you the very basics of lighting and color rendition. The aesthetics of filmmaking are very different and profoundly involved than with videography, which is just white Balance, three point light, point shoot and color correct.

the dynamic cinegamma curves and the 24p offered by the HVX is extraordinary. If and when you take your time to learn you will be a good music video maker, wowing people all over Guyana.

You have the passion and the talent, all you need is to grasp the technology.

Check out mvwire.com and any online articles on color theory. you editing is okay for music videos as long as you are in sync with your audio, the are no rules. For quick and easy coloring in HD get MAGIC BULLET.
