grinding focus ring

I know we've all heard.. "It was working just fine yesterday - now it doesn't." I'm talking about the focus ring, it's sticking/grinding while trying to get a focus. Has it always done this and I've never noticed. :huh:
 
Did you go to the beach, desert, sandbox or kitty litter factory?

The focus ring should be very smooth, sometimes to smooth.
 
Na - but I do have an (evil) step-cat. I've taken off the hood and lens filter and can't see any visible foreign objects.
