Hello everyone. I have seen in a lot of video sets, that the DP uses a Gretag Macbeth, I supose for check the color temperature of the shoots. My question is how can I use this card for my shoots?
thanks.

Avr Gretag card or a normal Kodak gray card (white - black - 18% grey) or an Orwo card (8 parts from white 100% to black 0.7%) or Fuji or anything is NOT for checking the color temp. It is for the color correction. In digital it is an addition to color bars for the colorist.

On 16/35/70mm you do a grey card on the beginning of every rell unless they are from the same roll (you know this by the roll number) in order to be certain that different tapes (not only different types of tape but also same emulsions but from different rolls) will be corrected good. It is just a reference for the colorist in order to know what is white for every tape. Good "card shot" is lit exactly with the tape light tipe (tungsten/daylight) and lit evenly (less than 1/3 of a stop difference) and placed directly in front of the camera.

When you shoot on digital it is good to have a grey card shot after every change of WB. It helps you match the colors and have the skintone and whites always the same.

Here is an article I wrote for the Motion Picture Editor's Guild on using a Greta Macbeth card in video and how I use it with color correction. The example is with Avid but the principals are the same.
