Greenscreen and HVX settings.

Hello,

I've got a greenscreen project coming up, and shooting with a HVX, has anyone got any tips on camera settings to achieve the best keyable image. I want to shoot at 720pn 25p with a Firestore v3.

Camera settings:

Details (is -3 ish ok?)
Chroma?
Master Ped?
Cine V, D or HD normal?
Matrix?
Shutter of 1/120 (less motion blur)?
IRE of greenscreen 50-60%?

Any others I should consider?

Any help would be much appreciated
Jon

pA, not sure? 50i or 25p I think. The trouble is im pushed for space and computer spec on a music vid I'm directing. So the lower data rate of the 720pn is what im going with I think, for multi layered keys.

Sorry, have no idea how to post a new post. I have a Canon XL2 and when trying Green Screen get the jaggies. My friendly Panasonic salesperson said I have the wrong camera and should be using the AG-HVX200. Willing to purchase but don’t want to get the wrong camera again. Tim

Camera settings:

Details (is -3 ish ok?) Minimize detail as much as possible, since it is artificial edge-enhancement, and that makes keys difficult.

Chroma? Neutral, no changes. Don't crank the chroma to make the green more green.

Master Ped? Remember that everything you do for the foreground also affects the greenscreen, so a low m-ped may make shadows in the screen more pronounced.

Cine V, D or HD normal? HD Norm works best for me

Shutter of 1/120 (less motion blur)? The less motion blur the better but you don't want to go too far.

IRE of greenscreen 50-60%? 50% is great, make sure it is consistent across the entire area that the subject occupies and garbage-matte the rest.

Jim Arthurs who's done alot of green screen screen suggests - 3 detail and a key level of 60-65% IRE. You may need to bring the sharpness back up after cutting the key in post though

I did one recently at 0 Db and about 55% IRE and it worked well with my client saying it could have handled an evenhigher Key level. I had previously shot at a key level of 45 IRE which is what I always did in the past and it was too noisy.

The rest of the settings should simply be for a good loooking normal picture to your taste. To me that usually means HDNorm and a pedestal of - 4. -4 on the Pedastel is where the "0" setting should be.

A lot of people here like B Press but it just looks crushed to me. But alot of people also run their blacks above - 4 which is elevated so maybe that's why they compensate with the B Press. Everybody has their own taste though - just my opinion.

I've done a lot of greenscreen with a lot of cameras- including the HVX-200.

Generally, light the screen, light the talent, fix the screen lighting. Expose the screen to be the same exposure as an 18% grey card in your scene (Zone II, IIRC)

Here's how I set up for some recent jobs:

Detail Level -7
V Detail Level -7
Detail Coring 0
Chroma Level +2
Chroma Phase 0
Color temp 0
Master Ped 0
News Gamma Off
Gamma: Low
Knee: Low
Matrix: Norm
Skin Tone DTL: Off
V Detail Freq: Thin

I'm using After Effects and Primatte plugin for keying. Here's some examples:

Edit: I also expose the green screen at 60 IRE. I light for the green screen first. Then light the subject based on the background plate.
