Greenpeace commercial shot on 5dmkII in India

As for Global Warming, I am interested in the politics of it and dislike some of the denier's views but don't think this is the right place to start an argument about it!!

Yes, let's drop it guys. We stand to learn some useful stuff from this thread so don't ruin it!

I bought the fader ND from Hong Kong after seeing the initial reports on Philip's blog versus the Singh Ray one. I recommend it, gives you great control over exposure without needing to resort to frame rate adjustments. 30p isn't quite as nice as 24p but 1/120 shutter is a LOT worse than using 1/30 or 1/40 for anything but super fast action. And of course, with the vari ND you get to keep the DOF nice and shallow...which is one of the reasons I prefer the 5D over the 7D... that, and getting the most out of my Zeiss lenses.

I would love to have a full sensor, if I had the option to shoot with the S35/APS-C section when needed. However you bring up a great point, that the ND will be even more of a worthy investment for APS-C sensors for controlling DoF.

Would you say it helps with aliasing at all? Or is it super sharp? Does it soften the image at all? I would love to see a full resolution still comparison if you didn't mind shooting the same thing twice and uploading it! Please.

Fantastic screen grabs! Some of those are stunning Phillip.

I hadn't thought about the lack of built in NDs until you posted about the Vario and Fader NDs! I have to thank you for that. It would have been a nasty oversight in my budgeting. It seems one of these is a must buy for those of us that complained about the limited ND settings on an HVX and dreamed about having three like in the HXP170 or HMC150. Unfortunately, a matte box is out of my personal-use range but this may be the solution!

_ What is the difference between the Vario and the Fader?
_ And can they replace a Polarizer as well?
_ Do they soften the image juuust a tad, possibly helping with aliasing?

I imagine you might be slammed with work, so perhaps someone else can help me understand the details about them. Especially the Fader ND since it is quite affordable, starts at one 1 light loss instead of 2, and doesn't vignette with a 24mm in full frame cameras.
My variable ND solution is DIY. I use a low-profile Marumi 82mm circular polarizer (this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Marumi-82mm-Cir...ters?hash=item4ceb17eb78&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) with a Hoya 82mm linear polarizer (here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hoya-82mm-LINEA...ters?hash=item35a38736fc&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) screwed on top of it. When fitted on my 28-75mm zoom lens with 67mm filter threads, there is no vignetting from the filters at 28mm. (This is on the 5D.)

The DIY will perform just as well as the Singh-Ray and the Fader ND. It's also more difficult and inconvenient to use. But it's cheaper, and it allows me to control polarization as well, because I have two rings that I can rotate (linear polarizer's ring is for controlling exposure, circular polarizer's ring is for controlling polarization) instead of just one. Two jobs in one.

Sure! I will do a test and see if it has an affect on aliasing. I have a GH1 but have just been brought over a 5D Mark II from Taiwan by my girlfriend, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares. Already love the full frame advantage with my Contax Zeiss lenses.

Thanks! I look forward to seeing this!

Thanks ydgmdlu! This is how I thought they might work. I would love it if it could be confirmed if the Fader ND does in fact also work like this.

And if so I guess we could use it as a Pola as well. But what are the differences in use?

Nice technical work on the video, well done. Since 30p heats up a sensor more than 24p, I think shooting 30p is globally irresponsible. We 30p'ers can make up for it by shooting 20% less than we normally would.

What about shooting at 60p? Can I offset the carbon by having a 5D Mark II body made out of wood with a small tree growing out of the battery compartment?
