Green Screen Shots

Here is green-screen capture from an Andromeda modded-DVX. Used only ambient light and sun light coming from a window to the left of the screen. The first shot is uncorrected. The second is composited in AE with minimal effort.

I might add that I'm quite happy with Andromeda, the latitude is impressive...., especially in the hightlight end.... For the first time I can see really nice sky-gradations which were impossible before. I'll be doing some more test and will post them as soon as I can.

I have moving footage which I would post compressed as soon as I can. Today I'll be shooting some more green-screen, this time with lights and with a person. Will post grabs tomorrow.

Solid. Would you say the andromeda turns your camera into a studio only camera? As in it needs to be in a fixed position on a tripod at all times and would be difficult to take location shooting, on say a steadicam? Better yet, can you post a pic of your andromeda setup?

The Andromeda setup, as you know, requires either a mac-mini or a powerbook attached to a 7200rmp firewire HD. Therefore the setup is totally portable. I just attach the external HD (a very small 2.5" HD which draws power from computer) to the powerbook and run the USB cable to the camera.... not quite the gun-and-run setup but close. I own a Glidecam and will be conducting tests with the computer inside a bookbag with the cover closed and will report next week. By the way... a 100 Gb Hitachi Travelstar HD lasts for about 1 hour.

The max resolution of Andromeda is 1540x984 at 8 bits and 1540x784 at 10 bits... There seems to be an issue with vertical aliasing but for my intents and purposes it's just fine since most of my work ends up in DVD at NTSC resolution, (and the footage I've shot so far, looks very nice in a CRT NTSC monitor) so I'm more concerned about latitude than resolution althougn I take the HD resolution of Andromeda any day over regular DV!

As a side note.... I was debating the purchase of an HVX over the Andromeda and my vote went to the Andromeda..... besides being a cheaper investment, I get better color at uncompressed resolutions. And I couldn't be happier now that I know that the HVX uses CCDs that are not very different from the ones the DVX uses. Also the HVX noise-issue has started to make the rain fall on the parade.
I believe the HVX gets HD the same way that Andromeda gets HD from SD. Like I've always said, I rather burn $3000 now and get the big guns later when available (XD HDCam or a Inifinity) or $8000 now and the big guns much further down the road.

I'm kind of with you there. I'm probably asking for trouble saying this, but, while I think the HVX makes a great image, every image I've seen so far reminds me of video. GREAT LOOKING video, but video non the less. There's something filmic about the DVX image and with improved lattitude and higher resolution, I was wondering what was the better way to go myself. HVX or Andromeda? The big issue for me was always the complexity of the rig setup. How cumbersome would it be to shoot with?

If you look at what Macgreggor did with his short SIMILO using a G35 adapter on a standard DVX, I mean geez. In no way did a single frame of that flik look like video. Even run and gun stuff posted by Steve (eyebite studios) shooting out his car window using his G35 looks more filmic to me. There's something organic about the DVX image. I think it's the nature of HD which pulls every little detail off your subject (and background) that gives it that video feel.

But if we can get the HD resolution and lattitude and color space off a DVX, then the only reason to go with an HVX (to me) is the simplicity of the setup. Makes it easier to use on set.

By the way, you said the 100gb hard drive lasts for about 1 hour. Is that at full resolution? Would love to see some motion shots posted if you're so inclined.

Thanks much-

Mmmmmmm I don't know about the DVX being more filmic looking than the HVX..... Even though I haven't had a chance with the HVX I'd bet they have the same filmic look, afterall 'like father like son.'
The 1 hour durarion is probably a little bit less since as Juan has explained, drives get slower as they get fuller so don't expect to fill-up the drive completly....Andromeda is very picky when it comes to bandwidth changes.
To me the Andromeda was the logical step-up to the next generation of cameras without breraking my bank. I believe the HVX is just a transitional technology, not as ground-breaking as the DVX once was, (expect next year HVX200a and a flood of HVX200 in ebay!) therefore my next big jump will be into the 1/2 and 2/3" CCD HD-cameras which will be within the reach of many more people now.

By the way..... I use to own a pre-Guerilla35 and let me tell you that next to latitude, DOF is what makes something look more filmic.... Now I'm waiting for cinemek to ramp-up production of the unit so that I could get my hands again on the G35.

Would love to post full-res uncompressed footage, but files are extremely large and will eat up my bandwidth in a hurry... I'll post short-compressed clips as soon as I can.

I've seen SDOF footage off the HVX as posted by holyzoo using his 35 adapter (granted, not a G35) and it didn't look filmic. Looked like video with SDOF. Steve's G35 footage off his DVX looked filmic to me. Pure run and gun using ambient light both indoors and out. Didn't remind me of video in the slightest. I wish it was something I could quantify or put into words.

I agree though, I'm waiting for hvx-200a to see what they do with that before buying. Until then, I'll work on my scripts and I can always rent one for a shoot if need be.

Looking forward to more posts from your andromeda.
