Green Screen Keying

Well I know this has been talked about before but could not find anything. We are doing a show for a cable station here in my town. It is a movie trailer show kind of like a comming atractions. Anyway we are going with a greenscreen set up with the talent in front of it and different back grounds. Kind of what VH1 is doing with Web junk 20. So I have the lighting down and we have a good green screen. But now lets talk to about camera setting. Do I shoot 30p or 24p. This is for cable TV. ALso what secne file setting do you recomend for a good. key. How much detail and such. Thanks guys. I do need some help.

I'd be interested in the same information. I will be doing some green screen work in July with the HVX.

I also remember reading this in posts long ago, but have not found it either. Does anyone who has chimed into other thread have links?

If you're doing the show for a cable station, do you have the option of running the DVX into a switcher, pulling your chroma key & recording externally?

Just a thought!

Good luck with getting a good looking key with DV.

DV25 is 4:1:1 compression, and you'll end up with a lot of green outlines unless you really finess each greenscreen key. You might be better off running the analog outs from the camera into a recording medium with less chroma compression. However, i'm not sure if the DVX's quality is any better from analog straight out, than recording straight to tape.

DO A TEST BEFORE YOU TRY TO SHOOT THIS, run into the problems and figure out the solutions now before the deadlines hit you.

The analog signal will not yield a better result. You can try it to see if you'd like it, but you will lose resolution/sharpness from going analog out. I'd just key it from the digital footage. DV is difficult to key, but not impossible. Lighting and setup are important, especially in getting a good amount of distance between the talent and the screen. It's also good to backlight the talent with a different colored light if that's possible.

Hey thanks guys any more info is good. Maybe berry could chim in with some settings for the best key off the camera. I know that DV is so bad for keying. But I don't have another option as of yet. When my HVX gets here we will be using that.

FPS is strictly a creative choice. It's not goign to make keying better at 30fps than at 24fps with the exception of the amoutn of blur to deal with. Note that your background will have to be shot the same way. Progressive in any case does make it easier in the composite.

Check DVGarage.com for a DV keyer.
