green screen and zebra marker

Hey guys,

I just lit my first green screen today and I think it came out well (I'm not editing so I'm not sure on that) but I'm curious about what some good settings would be specifically for the HVX.

I had a 15x15 green screen (i think, didn't measure, not my studio) and I put 2 4-bank Kinos on it. I checked it with a light meter and it was generally about the same, so I went to the camera and popped on the marker to start looking at what the camera sees.

I'm not sure what the allowances are for the tolerance in the key, so what would good settings be like for the HVX? For mine, the center was about 48%, if you went about a foot to the right then it would go down to 47%, but go back up to 48% by the side. Is this pretty good, or should it have been 48% all the way across? Also, I would have liked to have bumped the iris on the cam, but the director wanted it where it was.

So, in short, my questions are, should the % in the marker be exactly the same all the way across, or will it pretty much be acceptable if it varies only by a percent or two here and there? Last, what would be a good exposure rate for the green screen? If I want to get my skins to about 70%, what should I be aiming for with the screen?

Thanks

Great info in there!

I think you'll be cool. There's a lot of latitude with the HVX plus on most editors they'll have a clean up/garbage matte option. I used to spend hours working on the corners until I started using the garbage matte and other stuff. You can really pull a good clean key from the HVX without even lighting the key... Just follow the basics like you did and you'll be cool.
