Green Screen a perfume bottle

Anyone have any suggestions (outside of doing it in animation) for how to film a perfume bottle in front of a green screen (in a studio, good lighting options)....just don't see how to get around the whole transparent bottle issue...

While I'm at it, anyone have any tricks for simulating the spray out of said perfume bottle so it shows on camera....?

We're shooting this on an HPX500 in studio...btw..
is it really just a matter of better keying software then Motion or FCP? Since the green will go right through the bottle.....

Yes.

Look at dvmatte pro though for Motion or FCP, it will do what you need it to do. Built in keyers in most apps suck.

in theory, greenscreening through glass is no different to greenscreening around an object, but yes, keying is even more critical than usual, as the bottle image is going to contain a lot of partial green which you want to turn into partial transparency to show your background.

I suggest doing some tests with any old bottle and a plain green background - no sense in wasting money on unnecessary software etc

most particle emitter software should manage a fake spray pretty easily

thanks for the advice...the tests were rough. didnt play too long with it...the client is actually doing the keying --we are just shooting....I just want to make sure I don't miss a trick in production when we're in the studio

Avid's Spectra Matte keyer could also do this. It is standard in Media Composer if you have access to one.

Also you are getting a good head start by using your HPX. It shoots 4:2:2 and that will help.

As far as getting the spray. If you go practical you will need to back light the spray nozel. The easiest way would be to do it digitally if you are proficient with After Effects or another desktop compositor/FX program. This would be a pretty easy simulation with a decent particle system like Particular. If you want to take it to the next level you could model the bottle in 3d and use a fluid dynamics engine like real flow to do the spray. We have used it before and its fantastic. But it is also 2500 just for the plug-in.

Why do you need to green screen it. What will the background plate be?

Primatte has about 40 controls, some of which will help you fine tune green spill, detail level, etc.

The initial selection of background and foreground will get you most of the way there, but it really shines when you apply the proper controls to deal with various problems including how much transparency to retain in the bottle. And you can key the spray, too.

You might have to key various aspects separately. For example, when keying a model with flying hair I'll key her body with one setting, and key her hair separately with a different setting.

try sticking a white piece of paper on the back of the bottle, so that it will block any green from coming in. I've done this with a flower vase before but never for green screen and it certainly helps you control reflections and transparency issues

might be a long shot though

hes right, DVMattePro is good, it has no problem keying through glass and smelly water.

Only thing is, your finished composite wont distort like the original does....

I did this with DVmatte pro and an EEFX greenscreen:
