Apocalypse Now is in the lead! Are you all insane, it isn't a war film at all, it's a joke. :)

The Green Berets... just kidding. that's probably one of the most politically duplicitous war films ever made. from the films listed in the poll, it is a threeway tie between...

Full Metal Jacket for its twofold exploration of the dehumanizing phenomena of war.

Apocalypse Now simply for it sheer audacity.

The Thin Red Line for its truth, beauty and poetry.

Has anyone seen Grave of Fireflies? Animation can sometimes be infinitely more powerful than reality as the imagery can push and pull emotion.

As for the list Full Metal Jacket. This is the one of the few Vietnam War movies that really left me thinking. I never felt it was pushing an agenda or particular point of view. The character complexity and dynamic development , "Gomer" short circuiting, felt very real and possible yet blame can not be clearly assigned nor was it required.

Structurally the film does not payoff in the typical manner. There is no objective, no hill to take, no cause to take to Washington, nothing to blow up or morally satisfying redemption for the characters. It is a true war story. I said I never felt that it was pushing an agenda, yet when all said and done I feel that this is the most anti-war movie ever made.

Ok lt me answer this...

First, not including Patton is an oversight. I knew i'd miss something in my poll frenzy. That should be in there.

The Longest Day I don't like. I mean it was good in its day i'm sure, but to me it doesn't stand the test of time like say apocalypse does. Oh and S P R kind of covers the same territory to some extent. I actually tried to pick the best of certain types of war movie. platoon being the best of the small unit movies, metal jacket being the best psychological effect/black comedy/satire movie, and S P R being the most visceral.

Casualties of war would fall off for Patton most def had I remembered it. Thin Red Line I actually haven't seen but I have heard many say it is their favourite. It didn't look that good to me from clips.
It's not on the list but I'm going to have to cast my write in vote for "Coming home in a body bag". Although "Coming home in a body bag II" is not horrible it was just weird how they ressurected that one sgt. with the facial hair, dude, he was 'hilarious' as the bystander in that one scene from 'killing zoe' where that girl was being serviced in the hallway staircase thing by that one artifact from another rock n roll shoot em up that rog and q had written as a spoof but got picked up by disney before the h u g e shake up at the top, later, mike

Pop quiz, anyone know the most successful "War Film" at the US box office when adjusted for inflation? (No cheating!)

I will second:
-Saving Private Ryan
-Band of Brothers
-We Were Soldiers
-Patton

A few others not mentioned:
-Frank Capra's 6 part "Why We Fight" Series
-They Were Expendable
-Das Boot

Two that I can't believe no one listed:
-Schindler's List
-Braveheart

I have to agree on that

Just kidding but where is Tora! Tora! Tora! on the list?

I voted for Thin Red Line because I can watch it a thousand times and pick up something new everytime. Amazing work.

Oh, and I wanted to give a shoutout for Ridley Scott's G.I. Jane.

Master Chief went down like a *****. :)

Nice.

I too thought of Braveheart and Schindlers List and thought for me contemporary war film would define 'War Film'. (Combat, battles, epic)
