Nice.

I too thought of Braveheart and Schindlers List and thought for me contemporary war film would define 'War Film'. (Combat, battles, epic)
Your point is well received as far as Schindler's List is concerned. Although many consider it a "war" film, I could definitely see it more accurately categorized as a "historic" drama that happens to have a WWII backdrop.

However, I gotta respectably disagree with yuz on Braveheart...

"Combat"...check and check (among Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan as the finest in cinematic history IMO.)

"Battles"...several battles are portrayed on screen that are based on documented events (IE The Battle of Stirling Bridge)

"Epic"...if Braveheart doesn't qualify as epic, I need to reevaluate the word's meaning.

Granted it is not contemporary war...but war none the less.
IMHO of course.

Of course Braveheart has all that jazz. It's one of my all-time favortie films in fact. But....

I think War film; I think Contemporary War film.

WHAT?! No Pearl Harbor, or Windtalkers?! C'mon!!

Do I need to say I am kidding?

I do think that Black Hawk Down is a great "war" film (call me a n00b, I know), but then you'd have to define war...again. War was never declared on the Somali Militia in 1993...so...it was a very good 'conflict' movie.

All Quiet On the Western Front

All Quiet On the Western Front

You forgot All Quiet On the Western Front.

Where Eagles Dare - Burton, Eastwood, No Contest

I am inclinded to agree... I know the script off-by-heart - it was one of the only VHS films I had when I was young and my brother and I watched it nearly every day.

I have a soft spot for Full Metal Jacket. Probably because it shows the morbid sense of humor soldiers develop in war. I'm a fan of that kind of humor where you're unsure if its ok to laugh or not, but do anyway.

hey how about war of the worlds radio broadcast. lawrance of arabia. spartacus, little big man, last of the mohicans, dances with wolves,47th ronin

hey you guys forget technically in those days what they did, paved the way for you...oh how holywood forgets......did i miss spell? birth of a nation, technically amazing but the foundation .......well hell the foundation is america....the black robes....lil big man...the only good indian is a.......we have to put the fear of god in them savages! damn those who worship animals......we just slaughter them for the skins! tuskegee airmmen , buffalo soldiers shaka zulu ......aw hell you guys must be caucasian but no worries i'm sure you'll catch up on your history

My favorite would be Bridge on the River Kwai, even though it is sooooo not the real story of what those poor guys went through--THAT would be an AMAZING film done right.

Of those on the list, I'd have to say Platoon for just so many reasons. Heartbreaking. Horrific. Heroic. So many things.

I don't get Apocalpyse Now. I saw the Redux in theatres and saw the original cut on DVD. Just didn't do anything for me. Nor did Three Kings. After the hype about it, I found it just ok. Couldn't even tell you much more about it at this point.

Black Hawk down was also powerful. Flawed on many levels, but still potent.
