Glory! Of course! Fantastic film. (and I agree on We Were Soldiers)

Heh heh I was gonna get manic about Hamburger Hill and then saw the JUST KIDDING. Hamburger Hill. Hmmmmmmm. A fun film? Different; horrible lines throughout with 'Eh' combat sequences.

Funny . . . I've always thought Hamburger Hill was excellent. Many vets say it's the most realistic.

Got to vote for Full Metal Jacket for the following reasons: It's the only war flick that goes deep into the transformation of men into soldiers, the breaking down and building up process that turns them into the "crazy brave". It's filled with such great acting and writing (peace symbol on your helmet? "I was trying to make a statement about the duality of man!" or "soul brother too beaucoup!") plus it's action sequences of combat are gut wrenching (private cowboy takes over the platoon, faces a sniper, then people stop following orders and get him killed). It's funny, it makes you cry and we'll never forget the drill instructor's filthy monologue...as Cosell used to say, "That's telling it like it is."

i thought we were soldiers was horrible.

i dig full metal jacket/apocalypse now...and if we arent just sticking to movies (band of brothers)...how about M*A*S*H.?

i also nominate

Red Dawn
Rambo
Jacobs Ladder
hunt for red october

i dont think i could ever pick just one.

If Jacobs Ladder counts, then I choose that out of all of those. I don't think it counts though =/

The list is good but the movie that captured my attention was Saving Private Ryan! Now that was a movie experience!

Predator started off as a war film, can I say Predator?

I went with Full Metal Jacket, though I'm VERY partial to Kubrick's style.

A few days ago I watched Downfall...if you want to see a truly surreal war film, check it out. It takes place completely inside of Hitler's Bunker, during the last few days of the war. Absolutely insane.

I thought Downfall to be vastly overrated. No better than a TNT movie and not at all on par with an HBO film.

Couldn't disagree more. When everyone started committing suicide... definitely hit an emotional button, for me at least.

Yes yes. Thats the time where it got interesting to me; after they actually offed themselves. (I had some review a while back on this film)

I voted for Apocalyspe Now. Coppola is THE man. Very artisy film, but then again, I'm a pretenscious prick.

I hate to say it, but I never actually watched the entire "Full Metal Jacket". I tended to lose interest after "me sucky sucky". I mean, I watched the whole film when i was a kid, and always remembered that the first half was hilarious (it is a comedy, right?) and the second half was boring. Maybe I should give it another go.

The Deer Hunter is just too depressing for my tastes. AND it starts soooooooooooooo slow!

One of my favorites, though, has to be "The Dirty Dozen". That was just a really fun, enjoyable film. And let us not forget "The Great Escape". Awesome.

Other favorites are Renoir's "Grand Illusion" and "All Quiet on the Western front". Hard to believe the it was made in 1930. Way ahead of its time.

I'll try to think of some more.

Wait a minute, I changed my mind, my favorite war movie is "Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". Of course the war was the Cold War.

"Gentlemen, please! There's no fighting in the war room!"

Love that flick.

ahhh, i knew I was forgetting something. Nice job David.
Can I change my vote too?

"I'm not saying we won't get our hair mussed, but I promise no more than ten or twenty million killed, depending on the breaks!"

You gotta love it.

"Mandrake, have you ever been tortured?"
