Very, very tough one here. I have to go with Apocalypse Now on this one. It's tight though. Platoon, Saving Private Ryan and Full Metal Jacket are all up there.

Man you know what though, let me not lie, Three Kings is actually my number two. What a grossly underrated movie that is.

I have seen none of them and I only know Apocalypse Now. maybe the others don't have the same titles here in France

I'd say Band of Brothers... not really a "movie" per say, but one of the best.

I'm with Kai on this "Band of Brothers" is the best. If you watch them all back to back, like I have done, it is one hell of a great long movie ;)

How can such a list not include "Patton" or "The Longest Day"?

Ok lt me answer this...

First, not including Patton is an oversight. I knew i'd miss something in my poll frenzy. That should be in there.

The Longest Day I don't like. I mean it was good in its day i'm sure, but to me it doesn't stand the test of time like say apocalypse does. Oh and S P R kind of covers the same territory to some extent. I actually tried to pick the best of certain types of war movie. platoon being the best of the small unit movies, metal jacket being the best psychological effect/black comedy/satire movie, and S P R being the most visceral.

Casualties of war would fall off for Patton most def had I remembered it. Thin Red Line I actually haven't seen but I have heard many say it is their favourite. It didn't look that good to me from clips.

I'm still dissapointed not to see "The Deer Hunter"

Deer hunter eeeegh, yeaaaaah it's good but groundbreaking in it's field i dunno. It covers similar ground to apocalypse but not as well. I tried to pick the best of each type of war film to give good choices. Deer Hunter is better than a couple of choices but if you don't like that style of war film then putting two similar ones on the list narrows the options. I for one can't stand propaganda war films. To me we are soldiers was a good film but so USA all the way that i couldn't put it in as well as a bridge too far which to me is better and also very pro allies.

I say Platoon. I might have chosen another film at one time but one of the users here helped me see the errors of my ways.

Platoon get's my nod and gets into the heart of war like no other film; into the soldier. War isnt about impressive action sequences or metaphors but about the men who are dying for each other. I think Platoon probally captures this better than any other war film.

Your POLL options suck though; where is We Were Soldiers? Band of Brothers? I can;t even put Casualties of War into the same category as the other films.

I had to go with Apocalypse Now. Of course, it is probably my favorite movie, so I am a little prejudiced. It is, IMHO, so operatic, so mythological. I think that if Sophocles or Wagner had Vittorio Storaro and the helicopter fleet of the Philippine Army, they would have made the same movie.

While we're at it how about Stuart Cooper's Overlord? Or The Battle of Algiers? Ok, ok, the list... hummmm I'll go with Apocalypse Now.

You generally do not liek war films? Why (If I may) ?

I probably shouldn't throw a blanket statement like that out there. The war films I admire are the movies that show the horror of war, such as "Saving Private Ryan". I admire it and am glad I saw it, but it's not the kind of thing I would want to watch again. And I really don't care for movies that glorify war. I'm not entirely sure why that bothers me more than, say, a violent Tarantino flick.

I see "Three Kings" as more of a crime caper movie than a real war movie, so that's probably why I can pull out the DVD once in a while and watch it again.

Apocalypse Now, but Full Metal Jacket is a very close second as is We Were Soldiers (not on poll). Some other great ones IMO. Das Boot, Glory.

Some others I liked that are perhaps not as great as these are The Great Escape, Force 10 from Navarone, The Dirty Dozen, among others
