Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

This is a tip by JonnyMac buried in another thread but deserves its own. It enables you to have the video window on top and the timeline on bottom. This has caused be to be even more thrilled with the new Vegas and I really appreciate it! Thank you JonnyMac!

"Okay, this only works in Vegas 5.  WARNING: Messing with Internal Vegas settings can cause problems if you don't know what you're doing -- be very careful.

Here we go....

From the Options menu, click on "Preferences..." while holding the [Shift] key down.

You'll now notice an extra tab in the Options dialog called "Internal."  Click on that tab.

At the bottom of the dialog there is a text box called "Show only prefs containing:" -- enter "top" into this box.

Now change the Value for "Frame Dock at the Top" from FALSE (it's default value) to TRUE.

Click OK -- tada! ... a "standard" interface.  I saved this layout with [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[D], then [2] (the standard Vegas layout is on [1]).  Now I can happily go back and forth.

I like this better than undocking and moving windows as the program menu and toolbar remain at the top of the window where they belong."

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

Don't thank me, I'm just passing on a tip I leaned on the DMN forum.

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

Ok, now how do you make a second monitor for trimming instead of using the first for trimming. Its just aggrivating using the trimmer, sorry! I need to see my current timeline at the same time.

Thanks for that tip though, that makes vegas alot better for me!

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

You cant? Damn that sucks. I cant wait till i get premiere pro 1.5! You sure its not possible?

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

For detailed questions about Vegas, the forum on creativecow.net seems to be about the best I've found. Some real pro's hang out there and can answer almost anything -- guys like Gary Kleiner and Douglas Spotted Eagle. So if you're not getting the answers you seek here, give them a try -- it's a very busy forum with a lot of contributors and some great info.

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

Personally, I've found better answers and fewer politics on the DMN forum ... but both are valuable resources.  DSE left "the Cow" for DMN because of politics, though -- as you point out -- Gary Kleiner is a moderator there.  Sony also has a forum for Vegas where both contribute.

Lucky me, I'll be seeing both Douglas and Gary on Friday at the VASST event here in Dallas.  ;D

Funny, human nature... I could never figure out why two monitors were necessary and grew to really dislike Premiere -- especially with version 6 craching every five minutes, so I switched to Vegas (I was previously a fan of Acid, so perhaps that helped) and haven't looked back.

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

I didn't know Spot left the cow... wow, that's a big loss for them. Okay, DMN it is then!

You don't need two monitors; I know of no NLE where you can play both preview windows at the same time, so what's the point of taking up the screen space?  (I will now be flooded with messages about some NLE which can do it, for whatever reason.)

The dual monitor (or window) concept comes from old linear editing systems where you'd really have a "source" monitor -- imagine a VCR with raw footage -- and a "timeline" monitor -- a VCR which records.  You'd cue up your raw footage in the source VCR, log it, mark it, and then play the clip within the marks while recording with the other VCR.  (This is simplified.)

In that situation, it makes sense to have the two monitors.  "Established" NLEs have two windows because they emulate the workflow of the old linear systems.

But if there had never been linear systems, and NLEs had been created sui generis (that's "from scratch," in case you were wondering), I can't  imagine the source window would even be thought of.

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

only people who use vegas say there is no need for a second monitor.
i find it very useful for compositing purposes when i see both original clips before the mattes apply and then the way they are altered and finally the result window (i use speedrazor and it does what vegas can´t; but i also open many screens in after effects always).
but true for straight cuts etc. one is sufficient.

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

Well, you can always use the split preview to see your unaltered clip and your effects at the same time. The split doesn't have to be down the middle -- it can be anywhere you want.

I use/have used almost every NLE there is. After using Vegas for some time tho, it becomes clear that two monitors is not necessary-- it's just different.

So I guess you're right, only those who've used Vegas would say this. Are you saying we should feel bad for everyone else? ;)

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

david.. is that title an imported graphic or is that a Boris title?

Re: Great Vegas 5 Customization Tip!

The title is the font called "Adventure," meant to mimic the Indiana Jones logo. I just stretched it with the basic titler manipulation.

I'm trying to do something in a 1940s style, so I thought it looked good.
