I did a Nikon D90 test. I set the Picture control to Portrait. I set the camera to +5 on sharpness, +1 on contrast, +1 on saturation and I left the rest on 0. You can also do -1 on contrast if you have lots of light.

I shot a girl with these settings and it came out awesome. But she did not want to be posted on the web., So I tried it out on my cats.

No color grading. Straight out of the camera edited together and thrown up on youtube.

lens used 50mm F/1.8 existing overhead 60 watt bulb was all that was on in the room.
ISO 400..

nice, where do you go to change these settings?

1. Disable D lighting First.
2. Go to Set Picture Control
3. you will see the settings
standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome, portrait and landscape/
4. pick portrait for face shots, you can also apply these to other settings as well.
5. once selected. hit OK then move the direction pad where the Okay button is to the left. This will expose the settings.
Then change the settings to the above recommendations.
6. click OK again and it should save.

Then try it out...

I hope that helps..

Thanks man, that was exactly what i was looking for.

I had seen some other guys changing some config files in the firmware somewhere to change some settings so i didnt know if this was one of those deals, or just a menu thing.

D90 Picture Control Custom Settings

D90 Picture Control Custom Settings

I started a thread on this topic a couple of weeks ago, and posted a ZIP file with a couple dozen custom setting files. I won't repost what I wrote before, except to say that I tried to create a naming convention for the setting names that would be both brief and informative. You can read more about it in the original thread.

Use & enjoy!

Very cool man. How do you transfer these over? Just some option to do it?

and to OP, i tried these settings out last night and i liked the results. I will likely use them or some variant to shoot my next short (shooting starts tommorow)

These are the proprietary Nikon files. Copy them to an SD card from your computer desktop.
The proper folder location is:

SD Card:\NIKON\CUSTOMPC

Insert the SD Card into your D90, and navigate through the menus as follows:

Shooting Menu>>Manage Picture Control>>Load/Save>>Copy to Camera
