"Great" Movies that Suck

-2001: A Space Odyssey - LAME
-A Clockwork Orange - EHHHH
-Boggie Nights - SWEET
-Magnolia - SWEET UNTIL FROGS
-Traffic - LAME
-both Crash films (Cronenberg's & Haggis') - LAME
-The Piano - I PREFER THE PIANIST
-Lost In Translation - SWEET
-Fargo - SWEET
-Amelie- NEVER SEEN IT
-Do The Right Thing - FOCK SPIKE AND HIS RACIST ARSE
-Donnie Darko - SWEET
-Sideways - SWEET

The frogs were really that bad?

I thought it was weird, but it did happen.

Like, it happened in real life.

2001: A Space Odessey
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove
Barry Lyndon
Eyes Wide Shot
Lolita

I believe EVERYONE of these movies is overated. It leads me to believe that perhaps the filmmaker is too.

That's what I keep saying about him!!

I gotta disagree about Dr. Strangelove though...I feel it and The Shining are the only two great films he ever made (I don't count Spartacus...the wheels were already in motion when he took over.)

I'll go with The Shining and The Killing. Dr. Strangelove was okay the first time I saw it but it suffers the same fate as 2001. It just didn't age well.

Another thing that bothered me about Magnolia was when the cop dropped his gun or flashlight (haven't seen it in a while), he just sat there and cried...

these films are the ones it think suck that got acclaim or hype

The Alamo (Commercial Hype)
Pearl Harbor (Commercial Hype)
Being John Malkovich
Chariots of Fire
Dead Alive
Garden State
Grizzly Man (Documentary)
King Kong (2005)
Narnia
Magnolia
My Architect (Documentary)
Oceans Twelve (Commercial Hype)
Osama
Open Water (Indie)
Tarnation (Indie Doc)
The New World
28 Days Later (I know everyone here will disagree with on this one)
English Patient
War of the Worlds (2005, Commercial Hype)

There are many more I'm missing to be sure

Funny you say that because to me, that movie literally gets funnier every time I see it. And I watch it pretty often. I believe it is the greatest comedy ever made, or at least in the running with His Girl Friday.

But how people can say all of his movies are overratted is beyond me. He is one of the masters in all of film history. I do think that he was a very cold/calculating filmmaker, but I don't think that means he wasn't truely great. I think it even acts in his favor in the Shining.

Loved these

List of "great" films I just couldn't get into:

-The Ussual Suspects
-Traffic
-All 3 LOTR movies, each had great moments or scenes within each of them, but as movies, they are blah, especially the extended DVDs, even though I own them all. =/
-Garden State
-Napolean Dynomite
-American Beauty, I get cravings to watch it once and a while, then I remember why I don't like it
-Matrix movies
-The Pianist
-Fargo
-All M. Night Shyamalan movies
-V for Vendetta, can't stand this movie, even thinking about it makes me cry
-Pirates of the Carribean movies. they make me cry also
-BOOOOOOONDOCK SAINTS, hate this movie, any time I talk about movies I didn't like, have to add this one into the lot of them
-Tim Burton movies (excluding Batman)
-King Kong remake
-If anyone considers any of the prequels "great", then yes those also
-Brokeback Mountain

I think I am the only person who can watch 2001 any time of any day.

-All 3 LOTR
-Garden State
-Napolean Dynomite
-American Beauty,
-Matrix movies
-The Pianist
-Fargo
-All M. Night Shyamalan movies
-Pirates of the Carribean
-Tim Burton movies

So you have no taste in film?

omg, just saw v for vendetta, this movie is so bad it makes me want to puke.
-garden state was pathetic
-napoleon dynamite gave me one or two laughs
-american beauty, not horrible but way over hyped. denzel deserved the academy award that year
-matrix, i love the first won, reloaded was awful, revolutions was an improvement to reloaded
-pianist kinda bored me, this is the WWII movie right?
-Pirates, first one good second one sucked eggs
-tim burton is good
-brokeback mountain way over hyped, so was crash
-i love the usual suspects
-shyamalan is great, but i won't be watching his latest work any time soon, seems dumb. i'll wait for dvd on that one

American Beauty

Gladiator - everyone I talk to always has this on their list.

The Shining

Barry Lyndon

Star Wars 2-6

Jurassic Park - this one is more in hindsight - looked great because of the CGI which was a big deal in 1992, but now, it's just an above average action flick

Space Odyssey 2001 - Was good, but too long and pretentious. Frankly I think this is the Jurassic Park of the 60s in a way - it sticks out as a soft spot for people because for the time, the production value was way ahead of the times. But looking back on it a few decades later it is not as powerful, and is moreso a collection of great shots and metaphors strung together, vs. a strong film overall.

Vertigo and North By Northwest - I do like them, but everyone mentions them as Hitchcock classics, but IMO, both are a step below his best.

Blue Velvet

Amadeus

Fahrenheit 911 - politics and accuracy aside, poorly structured and needs about one hour cut out - felt like a rough cut to me overall.

Roger and Me - nice doc, but thought the coverage of "third world" america was more interesting than chasing Roger especially since he never met.

The Matrix - decent, but really just another Summer blockbuster. Never got the obsession behind it.

Signs - not that it was highly rated to begin with, but the fact people consider the Village worse overrates Signs IMO - it is ten times as bad IMO than the Village.

The Graduate - I did like it but some scenes were just pitiful, plus wasn't she still under the assumption he raped her mother when they ran off?

Schindler's List - was good, but did seem too preachy/pretentious. Frankly I never felt too much empathy with the protagonist - he came off like he was saving them as an ego boost moreso than morality.

Reservoir Dogs - for a lower budget semi-indie flick it's ok and I can see how people like it, but some of the cutting was poor IMO. Was more style over substance IMO.

Kill Bill 2

Return of the King - not a big fan of the trilogy, but this one especially was the weakest and needed more refining. All joking aside, I did literally think some of those hobbits were about to kiss .

Fargo - it is good, but really do not understand all the hype it got and almost has this label as a classic film, despite being only 10 years old. Frankly I do not even think this is the Coen's best film and arguably not even their second best. It's their first film with mainstream success so I think that's a factor was why it's billed as their best. Frankly I think Big Lebowski and Barton Fink are better.

Garden State - is worth watching, but really is monotonous and very shallow - how many slow pans of his face do we need to see? I've read there's a small following for this film for it's existentialist values - damn. Kafka should be rolling in his grave.

Lost in Translation - 2 hours of people staring out windows.

Touch of Evil - I think people were sold on the opening shot alone. Decent, but far from Welles best work post Citizen Kane.

Boondock Saints

28 Days Later - lackluster story and drab acting. Open Water should get the nod as a good prosumer camera feature over this.
