Great Footy and Behind the Scenes

I've been doing a lot of research on the Canon 5DII over the last week because we may be shooting the next movie with a Canon 5DII. (At least in part)

I found some great footage on vimeo that can help a lot of people and I have some observations.

Here's the footy

The first one is really good because first you see the video, then there is an Ex1 that follows the camera man around and you get a split screen so you can see exactly how fast the camera man was moving.

Observations thus far.

Yes the camera is jello, but as a few noted under 50mm the jello is not bad if you don't move fast.

For items that come in and out of the camera, the camera is perfect. So locked down shots are awesome.

IMO it has a better image than anything except maybe an EX1/Letus 4K combo OR a RED One.

Low light is comparable to naked Ex1!

Tilts aren't bad and show very little jello, dolly in and out are fine as well. (moving the camera towards or away from the subject smoothly) Only when the camera moves side to side does the jello become a major problem (based on footage - not on testing). The videos above have a few crane shots and when the cam moves vertically shows little jello effect.

Right now this may be the best camera under 4K and it has a bit rate of 38Mbps which is slightly higher than Ex1 at 35Mbps. It also doesn't need $500 Cards to work, only regular $60 cards. Sure it's not a video camera - but for those who aren't interested in corporate or wedding videos - this may be the answer to all your prayers. It's a great time to be an indie! :2vrolijk_08:

Might be - I don't own either. But I'm excited about the cam. I hope to get my hands on one this weekend and do some tests

It's funny to see an EX1 shooting the behind the scenes footage while the 5D is the main camera:cheesy: Ouch right in your EX1 :nads:

Did you use an anamorphic adapter or lens on the MKKII? Looks like you didn't but there is an awesome lens flare on the headlights.

The lowlight blows away the Ex1.

Something else to consider is that Ex1's 35mbps is Mpeg2 vs. the 38-41mbps 5d footage which is H.264.

H.264 is a much more efficient codec than mpeg2, so it is not only about the bitrate, but also the codec.

I just found this online and wanted to share it. I didn't make it - you'll have to ask out on vimeo.

nice! What's the music at the open? Thanks.

Ditto above.

Thanks Ryan. I'm getting very pleased with what I'm seeing from the Canon 5DMK2. I'm pretty confident we can shoot my next movie with it - especally since themovie is a comedy and doesn't need much movement anyway.

Thanks everyone
