GH3 Great Comparison Video with GH3, GH2, BMC, Nex, etc

BMCC footage at 2.5k looks king... Surprisingly GH2 hacked footage looks amazing and even better than 1080p BMCC footage imo.

BMCC at 2.5k will look better but what may be important to many of us for awhile is 1080p for delivery. Of course the BMCC has so many other advantages but in terms of raw detail once you get down to 1080p the GH3 and BMCC seem to be about equal. The BMCC keeps wanting to lure me in like an evil Siren with its seductive sexiness but when all is said and done I think the GH3 is still practical for me in my 1080p world. Heck even my GH2 still seems to hold its own at 1080p. A bit noisier and not easy to reduce the over sharpness but still a valid camera and a deadly weapon in the right hands.

I still watch this better .......but it all depends on the skill of the camera operator.

.............for me the GH2 it's better.

----------------------------

GH2 is great, but Red Epic and BMCC are better. Also GH2 requires more light to operate than a Canon 60d,5d, etc. so in low lighting situations the Canons are stronger due to being able to see more and less noise. Now what the GH2 excels at is resolution. It's a true 1080p image unlike the Canons which is somewhere in the 720p or even less. The GH2 being able to shoot such wide beautiful shots is simply not possible on Canon dslrs.

GH2 though has higher noise which I dislike and also suffers from more rolling shutter compared to Canon dslr. Overall though GH2 imo is still king as the Resolution is what wins at the end of the day. Now compared to RED and BMCC it falls behind in resolution and dynamic range. For price/quality GH2 is the best picture video camera that exist. If Price is no concern though there are many other options.

Canon C300 imo is the best 1080p image camera I have seen. Even the Red Scarlet shoots poor noisy 1080p image.

I am really interested though in the BMCC, something about that 2.5k Raw image that looks so organic, reminds me of Alexa.

Thanks, here's something to admire.......................

In terms of image quality, the BMCC is definitely best... in every way.
Admittedly, the hacked GH2 comes close enough that it wouldn't really matter what you shot the film with, the casual audience will perceive both images as the top pier of imaging. For example, given a side by side comparison of the two, my non film friends wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I'm surprised nobody is talking about the GH3 samples in this video. The GH3 at least to me seems to cover some of the minor limitations the GH2 currently has. Cleaner gain at 1600 ISO which may mean cleaner at every ISO and the ability to dial the detail down to make a more organic looking image. My take away with this video is just how much the GH3 actually builds on the GH2 even though it isn't hacked yet. Perhaps it is harder to see the difference when the BMCC is there to skew the results.

Those were my thoughts exactly. If we were to extract the BMC footage, the GH3 would stand out very well. The Sony NEX is a MAJOR disapointment...that was the other option I was considering, but this video makes the choice clear.

Different flavors of ice cream ya'll- the BM looks gorgeous, but it's inadequate for everyday use, and that is where the GH3 is shaping up to be a home run. Pretty darned close, half the price, and it's still in its infancy.
NOW, when I can get black Magic visual quality plus stills with intelligent DSLR ergonomic design (which seems a huge BM handicap currently) I'd pay 5 grand and sing about it on street corners.

Yay competition and progress!

It's a great time to be a camera enthusiast :)

Really? Why's that? I've been able to use Blackmagic in place of the GH2 just fine for similar use.

Amen to that. A somewhat weather sealed, egonomically intelligent camera in a robust casing that - btw - takes good to excellent stills for half the price....??? It's almost a no-brainer to go for that thingie if one has the budget.

Hope mine arrives soon.

And for all Panasonic sales people reading here: My fellow PAListanis and me had to complain, holler and shout at you for bringing 25p for a year or more to the GH2 until you decided to take the logical step and introduce it. Please be a bit faster this time with focus peaking. Yes. Focus peaking. This little red dots on the screen.....? That's what we want. Really.

Didn't mean it as a criticism against you Kholi, I'm sure it's a great application for a full time filmmaker with the requisite hardware and support equipment. But you must agree that it's not a design that is compatible with broader user bases. It is a very unusual and specialized design.

I'm still glad for the BM , and hope it's just the first wave of more styles to come -

The shape of the BMCC is actually not all that different. Once you put the BMCC on a rig which most professional DSLR users would do anyway then the form factor isn't really all that different. Both a DSLR and the BMCC are kind of equally odd shaped for extended video shooting without good support and accesories. I could easilly swap out a GH2 on my rig with a BMCC and hardly notice a difference except for the touch screen controls. Raw recording isn't very practical either but the ProRes is much more practical. I could eventually see even wedding videographers using the BMCC on a rig shooting ProRes with almost as much effort as a DSLR.

I shudder at the thought. Good job I don't do weddings. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Yeah it may be tougher for them at first but they had just as many growing pains when they first started using DSLRs as well. Well at least on the Canon end they did. I do know one guy that actually shot a wedding on a RedOne however so we cannot exactly rule it out. Once you put a BMCC on a rig or tripod I see no reason why it wouldn't be able to handle it.

Personally at this time I think I will be upgrading to a GH3 instead. If my short film I am working on does well I may consider moving up to the BMCC or just renting the Red Epic at work which may end up costing me the same in the end.

Thomas,

Quite a fair point.

I guess the toaster look is just disorienting compared to a regular camera- but you may admit that as far as haptic layout, a DSLR-type format is more useful- but perhaps the magic toaster is the way of the future, and we're just used to the old style :)

I'd love to see a more barrel-shaped device that does stills and video alike, that's a mix between camcorder and DSLR functions. It would aim intuitively, allow for better body bracing and internal image stabilization, and...ah, but now I'm just imagining things...

Kindest regards--

BMCC looks very very good in RAW... almost a shame I have no need, budget, or inclination to futz around with RAW workflow or any of the other foibles of that camera. Maybe in its 2nd m43 generation...

Don't want to pay for the 5D3 (and its lenses). VG900 looks just as bleh as the other VG cams.

GH3 looks like the logical step for me, if I can justify the expense vs. the time savings in workflow (shooting straight to .MOV is a big plus, as is monitoring audio). Luckily the expense isn't all that much.
