F55: Great article on Sony's F, Dynamic Range

Interesting, so it looks like the F5 matches the F3's 13.5 stops of DR in 10-bit recording. I wonder if the amount of DR allocated to the highlights is higher on the F5?

After finally getting some nice weather here I stress tested S-log @ s-gamut on my F5 and I can unscientifically state it easily out does my F3 in 10-bit. Yes, I believe there is a lot more "muscle" in the highlights now.

These frame grabs are out of Resolve from a XAVC file with the new LUT that Nate and Dennis have been talking about and is now I believe available on Sony's forum. The LUT does excessively crush blacks a little and these can be brought up easily but I wanted to show what a quick pass with the canned LUT will do, nothing else applied on these. I exposed these so only the tight circle of the sun and reflection in the windows was reading 109 on the zebras. However, when looking at them on the waveform in Resolve, neither points of light were clipping after the LUT was applied. To me, that's impressive. Hope the forum compression doesn't mangle these on upload so you can see them "as is".

*Note:
Here below is a grab before any LUT was applied, check the "banded highlight" on the sun. It scared me when I first saw it but the LUT did some crazy highlight mojo to it. It's a QT because it had been transcoded to ProRes but all versions have the banding pre-LUT.

Nice frames! The Sony LUT does crush blacks too much so if you like try the one I modified called LOW CON 1 which shifts gamma by very small amount and increases brightness slightly. Alternatively you can just add your own filters to achieve the same effect and tweak.

I'm curious to know how you have been setting your exposure? Today I was shooting some planes landing and decided to set zebras at 70% and not let anything light colored show up in stripes. It seems to work quite well actually after applying LUTs.

Hopefully we get some exposure tools soon.

Your gonna hate me but Im using my $700 Zacuto EVF with Zebras that go down to 33 and up to 109 and has false color. I refuse to buy the Sony EVF until their sorted correctly with proper exposure tools. Maybe if more people did that it would light a fire under their ass. While I was out today I aimed at a 18% grey card and adjusted exposure until my Zebra hit 33. Then set my light meter down to ISO 32 from 2000 to compensate for 6 stops of ND, metered the scene, bam! same exposure as I had set on the lens. Well a quarter of a stop off actually..

Ah lucky you. Funny I considered Alphatron EVF instead of Sony OLED but then decided to stick with all sony solution and not worry about extra cables for video feed and power...

I keep meaning to bring light meter with me but forgetting. I knew from sunny 16 rule I should be around f5.6 - f8 at 1250 ISO. But my brain hurt trying to figure it out in the field.

There's a really finely tuned desaturation in the middle of the highlight rolloff on the LUT.

That's one of a bunch of reasons of why I say, yeah, you can do all this by hand in the grade, but there's a lot going on in just fixing the camera response before you even get to grading. Highlight rolloff, desat in highlights, mid tone contrast in just the right spot, it goes on and on.

I thought that might be the case. Excellent - highlights is where you want DR to be. Have you still got your F3 Bill? I'd love to see a low-key comparison between the cameras and see whether the F3 therefore reaches further into the shadow than the new cameras.

I do still have the F3 but it would honestly take a lot of motivation for me to lug them both out for a side by side. Lazy, I know. From just looking at new S-Log2 footage I cant say that I've seen a lack of shadow detail compared to the F3, nothing has caught my eye in a bad way.

Sorry guys for this dumb question .. I use the smallhd AC7 did the sony F5 output the Zebra and peaking via SDI ? I tried but can't do that.

I'm stick with the AC7 exposure tools wich I didn't like it too much

The zebra does not output via SDI. You would need to use whatever scopes, zebras, etc are available in your external monitor
